I understand their reasoning, but I really wish they’d released a ROM file for purchase. I want to support the devs by buying a software license, but I want to add the game to my MVS emulator cabinet and $300+ for a cartridge I can’t use is a bit much.
This isn’t a prerelease hype cycle sort of situation. Once it’s out there it’s out there, but if it’s NOT out there and you announce it, Nintendo can stop you.
@leogames there’s a difference between imagery, which is interpreted by the imagination to smooth out the errors and fill in the pieces, a code, which is precision by nature.
I’m not defending AI art, but having a finger in the wrong place, or a color going outside the line usually won’t break our imaginations, whereas a misplaced semicolon or function will break the whole code.
One is about presentation, one is about precision. LLMs are about presentation, not precision.
Zelda 2 wasn’t a failure, it was just released at the wrong time. If it had been released during the SNES era when development had more time and technology to mature, it would be a big hit. Sure it might face some of the same stigma for being different, but an action rpg version of Zelda on par with Super Metroid would have been excellent.
Honestly I think Zelda 2 is most deserving of a complete remake.
I have no reason to purchase this console and I imagine it’s a relatively small market considering NeoGeo’s original buy-in price, but I always support the attempts at repro or repro-like consoles and software. Having history like this become unpurchaseable due to aging out is always a blow to gamers.
There is nothing about this that says Atari to me, other than the blatant “Atari” name printed on the face which somehow manages to look forced, and the Atari logo on the bottom part that will be completely obscured when wearing it.
This is a watch that screams “I want an iconic branded watch, but I’m too embarrassed for it to be recognized.”
And for that price…lmao. They’re so full of themselves.
It’s heartening to me to see new games being developed for old consoles, proving that graphical fidelity is not the end all be all to gaming. Too many developers and publishers are chasing the dragon when it comes to photorealism and forgetting that gameplay comes first, and a well made art style can just as often be as good as ultra realism.
@KociolekDoSyta DC kinda falls into that weird in-between gen, but I include it in retro because it was Sega’s final console and the next gen included Microsoft replacing them. Seems like a good hard divide for me.
Retro for me will always be the PS1, DC, N64 and earlier era.
PS2, Xbox, GameCube up to Wii U, 360, PS3 are their own category. I’unno what to call it though. Golden era?
PS4, XBO, Switch up to current gen are their own category; the Modern era.
While I never learned Japanese, I grew up watching anime and even playing Japanese games for a short phase. I have what some may call a weeb’s grasp of the language and culture (I’m less annoying about it these days). So while I don’t fully know enough to fully grasp a story without translation, I’ve picked up a few things. Whenever I do notice a discrepancy between the audio and the subtitles, it annoys me. Whenever I happen to catch a cultural joke that isn’t translated properly, it annoys me. I know nothing about this game, but if the machine translation is missing nuances and cultural jokes, that sounds like it would annoy me. I would much rather rather have a team of true fans do the translation without the use of AI so we can get all the little things right.
The visual style looks much better and more unique than the multitude of copy/paste visual styles of practically every game on display on the PS State of Play.
Xenogears was one of the best games of the generation and still lives on in my head today as an icon of the era and one of the best JRPGs of all time. It’s a shame it was rushed at the end and never truly had its story continued officially. Although the circumstances lead to Xenosaga and eventually Xenoblade, so I can’t say it’s all bad.
But this article highlights one aspect of censorship that is really frustrating. Due to the overtly Judeo-Christian religious overtones and the extreme sensitivity to such topics in the west, those of us who aren’t believers or practice a different religion are forced to deal with chilled speech.
The Vita hardware itself wasn’t the failing point of the console. It was arguably the best part of it. Copying that homework is fine to me, as long as they don’t also copy the proprietary memory card part. (Also I never cared for the rear touchpad, so I wouldn’t miss that either)
If it can emulate up to PS2 and Vita games without issue, and there are no weird failings of the hardware, then this may be a purchase for me.
Edit to the Update: I’m no longer confident with this product’s capabilities.
The only uses I can see for having a screen on the controller are for Wii U emulation (which it doesn’t sound like this will be useful for) and Dreamcast VMU integration emulation (which is probably possible, but unlikely).
I think something to keep in mind here is that the 2DS was A product, not THE product. 2DS opened up the doors for a greater number of customers, but many 3DS customers would not also be 2DS customers. Having the option is important, even if the 2DS was a success.
One thing you said that I feel needs repeating over and over again whenever there are calls to make the next Nintendo console basically an N-branded PlayStation is that line: “Nintendo itself is the platform, not the hardware.” People don’t buy Nintendo to play the latest technological hardware and software breakthroughs. People buy Nintendo to play Mario, Zelda, and Pokemon (as well as Big N’s other franchises).
I think Rerez already proved that it’s not 100% perfect in their recent video as they break down how one game in particular has a timing based title screen that doesn’t align perfectly with the original hardware.
Also worth considering, old authentic hardware itself may have slowed down or sped up minutely similar to how SNES consoles have over the years.
But it’s so close that it’s basically imperceptible without a side by side as this person has even admitted. So they’re basically making a big stink over nothing.
The only people this is going to affect are speedrunners who won’t be able to use the analogue 3d in place of original hardware to submit runs.
I haven’t bought anything from them in a number of years, but I still love the work that they do. This is a real shame.
From a consumer aspect, I think their biggest problem is that most customers only have room in their homes for one, maybe two arcade machines (not counting collectors). That kind of fits them in the large appliance space which means they need a constant influx of new customers, or planned obsolescence. Unfortunately, the home arcade space is a niche market so it’s unlikely they’d see a continuous flux of new customers, especially when the prime demographic is older millennials and above.
I think what would have helped them would be to sell various styled cabinets and the actual arcade game with control deck separately. Something of a hybrid between arcade cabinet and home console. Want to play a different game? You don’t need a whole new cabinet taking up more of your limited living space. Just undock the control deck and dock in the new one. Blam, new arcade. If you don’t like your cabinet design, you can always buy a different one and your existing control decks would still work (in theory).
They could even go the extra mile and give their detachable control decks an HDMI out so you can plug them in to a television like those ∞-in-1 consoles.
This seems like it’s too good to be true. It really feels like an overpromised Kickstarter pitch that will ultimately fail to deliver on those promises and screws around with backers for years before ultimately, begrudgingly putting out a slapped together shoddy product that falls short of a good experience.
But only time will tell for sure. I know the Ryzen AI Max APU/NPUs (whichever they are categorized as) are supposed to be almost magical, but I’d still be wary of backing this one myself.
Fake trailers have been a thing since video streaming on the internet. Although, IP protection has been increasing in recent years as well. I could see this case going either way.
I wonder if the quality and success of the Analogue 3D had anything to do with this. Harder to put out an inferior (for the sake of argument, there’s no basis for this claim) product when there’s a good example for everyone to point to.
He’s not wrong. It’s already happening.
AI generated websites taking advantage of SEO to generate clicks and ad revenue just filling in whatever information it wants to, then AI search summaries like Gemini take these things at face value and repeat it confidently incorrectly. Users don’t verify the information because when you’re searching for a quick answer, you’re not looking to put in the same effort as writing a thesis.
How many ‘users’ out there on social media sites are just bots or AI talking to each other? I’m not suggesting we’re in the dead Internet theory, but we are watching it happen right now.
The Internet is one of the great wonders of the world. It brought the age of global information to the world. Who would have thought flooding every corner of it with the firehose of falsehoods would be a good idea?
I would 100% buy this if N64 cartridges were still in production. As it stands, I no longer have any of my old N64 games, so my interest in this product is merely one of nostalgic excitement. I’m glad this exists and is as good as it is.
