Re: "They Lied" - New Research Casts Doubt On Analogue 3D Accuracy Claims

breach187

I think Rerez already proved that it’s not 100% perfect in their recent video as they break down how one game in particular has a timing based title screen that doesn’t align perfectly with the original hardware.
Also worth considering, old authentic hardware itself may have slowed down or sped up minutely similar to how SNES consoles have over the years.
But it’s so close that it’s basically imperceptible without a side by side as this person has even admitted. So they’re basically making a big stink over nothing.

The only people this is going to affect are speedrunners who won’t be able to use the analogue 3d in place of original hardware to submit runs.

Re: Reports Suggest Arcade1Up Is Shutting Down

I haven’t bought anything from them in a number of years, but I still love the work that they do. This is a real shame.

From a consumer aspect, I think their biggest problem is that most customers only have room in their homes for one, maybe two arcade machines (not counting collectors). That kind of fits them in the large appliance space which means they need a constant influx of new customers, or planned obsolescence. Unfortunately, the home arcade space is a niche market so it’s unlikely they’d see a continuous flux of new customers, especially when the prime demographic is older millennials and above.

I think what would have helped them would be to sell various styled cabinets and the actual arcade game with control deck separately. Something of a hybrid between arcade cabinet and home console. Want to play a different game? You don’t need a whole new cabinet taking up more of your limited living space. Just undock the control deck and dock in the new one. Blam, new arcade. If you don’t like your cabinet design, you can always buy a different one and your existing control decks would still work (in theory).

They could even go the extra mile and give their detachable control decks an HDMI out so you can plug them in to a television like those ∞-in-1 consoles.

This seems like it’s too good to be true. It really feels like an overpromised Kickstarter pitch that will ultimately fail to deliver on those promises and screws around with backers for years before ultimately, begrudgingly putting out a slapped together shoddy product that falls short of a good experience.

But only time will tell for sure. I know the Ryzen AI Max APU/NPUs (whichever they are categorized as) are supposed to be almost magical, but I’d still be wary of backing this one myself.

Re: "AI Is Gonna Eventually Eat Itself... Like When We Fed Cows With Cows And Got Mad Cow Disease"

He’s not wrong. It’s already happening.
AI generated websites taking advantage of SEO to generate clicks and ad revenue just filling in whatever information it wants to, then AI search summaries like Gemini take these things at face value and repeat it confidently incorrectly. Users don’t verify the information because when you’re searching for a quick answer, you’re not looking to put in the same effort as writing a thesis.

How many ‘users’ out there on social media sites are just bots or AI talking to each other? I’m not suggesting we’re in the dead Internet theory, but we are watching it happen right now.

The Internet is one of the great wonders of the world. It brought the age of global information to the world. Who would have thought flooding every corner of it with the firehose of falsehoods would be a good idea?

Re: The Oliver Twins Are Reviving Ghost Hunters Using (Shudder) Generative AI

breach187

I don’t support this use of AI, but I also think people are extremely negatively reactive to AI as a whole, even in cases where it’s actually useful and makes sense.
The horror game genre is one place where it could be a good use case for generative AI. One of the biggest issues with horror games is once you’ve identified the mechanics behind everything, the game becomes much less scary. This is something that AI can solve through randomly generated events and unique spooks; things that you can’t just point to the underlying game logic to demystify it. It seems specially suited for games that rely on randomized and tile-based events, like the Diablo series for example.
But I definitely don’t support it taking the place of skilled human labor, and especially not art.

Re: "We Brought The Rivalry To An End" - Atari Reveals The Intellivision Sprint

breach187

I misread “brought that rivalry to an end” in the trailer for “bought that rivalry to an end” which is actually more fitting.

One point of note, and this is from someone who has no nostalgia glasses for the Intellivision, is that the controller overlays are going to be a huge nuisance. Perhaps it would be better to have a cheap e-ink screen behind the inputs that could change to the appropriate game overlay. Something like that would probably raise the costs and thus price of the console quite a bit though, making it potentially infeasible.

Lastly, this is an unholy union. It would be like if Nintendo released a new Genesis console.

Re: Review: Atari Gamestation Go - A Tour Of Atari's Legacy With One Too Many Bumps In The Road

This tickles the hardware enthusiast in me, but I’ve never been attached to the Atari brand or games. The emulation bonus is pretty cool, but probably not enough to justify it l when there are a multitude of better portable emulation devices.
It does LOOK really cool though.
I suppose at a glance, without having the hardware in my hands, the most annoying element to this is how they have the Atari branding in the UI right below the Atari branding on the hardware.

Re: The Atari Gamestation Go Launches Next Month

breach187

I feel like Atari is putting the cart before the horse here. They’re revealing and launching way too many hardware products when anything and everything under the sun (including a plethora of their own licensed products) can and does play basically the entire Atari library of games already.

What Atari needs to focus on right now is polishing their brand after it’s been passed around like a… well, best not to say. That comes in the way of putting their heads down and really focusing on delivering solid, polished SOFTWARE experiences to build up a fan base first. These aren’t the 80s when there’s little competition in the console space anymore. You need to do more than make a shiny video about some new retro handheld.

I mean do we really need 3 new ways to play Pac-Man?

It really feels like they’re trying to flood the market with Atari products, and we all know what happened the last time Atari flooded the market.
