@Hexapus Interesting. Thanks for the heads up! Comments like this, even if all I ever do is check out that Wikipedia link, are sincerely appreciated and really add to the community, in my opinion.
@poyo_pie Yeah, I remember watching a YouTube video where someone had stitched the cutscenes together. Can't really recall it, but I think it wasn't bad. Definitely a cool idea to put into a game that I'd love to see again. There was a Harvey Birdman game like that too, where you essentially get an extra episode of the thing you enjoy, just by playing, though I wouldn't be surprised if you've heard of that, haha. If you haven't, however, it was published by Capcom and was an Ace Attorney parody that was kind of mediocre. So, once again, super cool idea inside of a letdown of a package, unfortunately, though unlike the Futurama game I think it's worth playing.
@Themilkman Hey, fancy seeing you here! This was a wonderful read. I mentioned on Bluesky that I've been a fan of yours for a while, but before I followed you on 1up, I grew up with an EGM subscription. You and the other OGs in my life like Crispin and Hsu gave me monthly lessons in humor, article construction, and journalistic integrity that I used in both school and work.
This is all to say that when you say that Itagaki-san was integral to your career and development, it makes the respect I already had for him breach the atmosphere. Thank you so much for taking the time to articulate all of this. I'm excited for the book and content to wait as long as I need to purchase it.
He was right about the moniker, of course. You introduced yourself as "Milky" in an issue of EGM and it allowed me to recognize you multiple times over the years, like when I came across your article about your incredible engagement ring. Seriously, if anyone reading this comment hasn't heard about this, look it up. Spoilers: the ring was designed by a certain Final Fantasy artist and the music box in which it was presented to his partner played a melody composed by a certain other Final Fantasy veteran. It's utterly incredible.
I know it's rough right now. I lost my own brother a few years ago, very suddenly. My mother's cancer finally caught up to her last year, though it never truly beat her. It gets easier, but... well, you've heard it before, I'm sure. But this, what you're doing to honor your brother's memory? That's phenomenal. That's what he deserves.
Take care of yourself, man. The fans have your back, with Hayabusa Ninjutsu (though honestly, I get pretty winded after a only a few Izuna Drops these days... late-30s problems).
P.S.- YOU'RE the reason that effing blimp fight only KINDA makes me want to tear my face off?! Gamers across the world owe you a beer or three, geez.
@MARl0 I remember reading a webcomic, years ago, where an unemployed character at the beginning kept getting rejected over and over for being "overqualified." He was living out of his car, growing increasingly desperate and irate. After being given that reason yet again he responded with something like, "I'm sorry, I guess I don't understand the problem. Are you worried I'll do too good a job?!"
@JackGYarwood Heads up, possible typo: "playable outside of RetroArch in a standalone app for ." I'm usually on mobile when I browse this site and both Firefox Mobile and Edge have been acting weird lately, so this could be a rendering issue on my end, but I wanted to bring it up just in case. I can't check on PC at the moment, so apologies if nothing's actually wrong.
That's really disheartening. I hope the business culture and law in Japan get sorted sooner rather than later, though I know that's no small ask. And I hope that those of us in the rest of the world can get our acts together too.
@HoyeBoye Yeah, it was a mediocre 3D platformer. It's a shame that it wasn't very good, because there's nearly a whole episode's worth of fully voiced cutscenes, I believe.
Man, so many articles about feature phone game preservation lately. I'm not particularly interested in checking them out myself, but I love reading that they're out there for those who are.
I don't have the space or the money for physical collecting at the moment, but this is certainly interesting. You can still have some fun with Snafu and Shark! Shark! today.
@Scollurio Hmm, I honestly hadn't considered it. Even if I never end up reading anything of his, I may seek out a video or two based on your comment. Thanks for the heads-up!
@KGRAMR How weird to be kind of excited about modern Atari releases. I'm not saying they've regained their earlier status or can do no wrong or anything (far from it), but they're currently LEAGUES beyond where they've been for years, in my opinion.
In Atari 50, they had a whole section on the Jaguar's passionate homebrew community, so some kind of hardware catering to the dedicated fans could definitely be on the cards, I feel. Would be pretty cool to see.
Haha, I actually still have a light gun and a third-party foot pedal for PS2, specifically for playing Time Crisis 2. Totally ridiculous purchase, as I didn't even get a chance to use them THAT much before I no longer had access to a CRT, but man... lots of fun. I might consider looking into this one day.
I'm glad, but it sucks that statements like this have become necessary. Imagine "culinary arsenic" getting popular enough that a bakery felt the need to assure us it doesn't use any.
@JackGYarwood Heads up, missing a "to": "As you may recall, though, Vivendi wasn't be the final publisher of the game..."
I love this game. It catches a lot of flak for its flaws, and fair enough, but it has great characters and writing, a killer soundtrack, and a lot of heart. Plus, something about upgrading the vehicle you use to get around the world... Add that to your game and you're likely to get an extra point out of 10 from me, haha.
I like Shuhei. One time, live on stage, he told David Jaffe to chill out after Jaffe wouldn't stop whining that a journalist had poked a little fun at the artstyle of his recent turd Drawn to Death. It was inappropriate and weird. Shuhei said something like, "[Kyle Bosman] is a comedian and a good guy. He was just doing his job." Jaffe didn't seem pleased, but mostly took it in stride and got back on topic.
@Damo Genuine questions, no snark or anything intended: Is it difficult to take pictures of glow-in-the-dark things? Have you noticed any tint at various angles in the lens' anti-reflection coating? How does being sent something so expensive and limited work? Do you get to keep it or is it just for some temporary hands-on time?
They look pretty slick to me! I don't know why, but I've always wanted to be a watch person. Can't ever get into the habit of wearing one, though. The ubiquity of cell phones hasn't helped.
Interesting, I'm not familiar with this series at all, and I was a kid who was into kart racers at the time of their release. And they're high quality? I'll have to look into this collection; hope it comes to consoles.
Dear All of Leicester,
I'm very envious of you right now, therefore you are jerks. I'm so sorry, but that's just how it works. The rhyme is incidental.
Love,
Me
@JackGYarwood "Now, though, thanks to the Kingdom Hearts' archivist Aid1043, there is finally the option to experience them entirely in English, removing any potential barriers that players may face."
Respectfully, this is only true if you speak English. Not at all trying to be snarky; it just sounds a little odd to me as written. Also, should an apostrophe be there after Hearts?
I only gave it a cursory search, but it seems like some of the PSP-exclusive content has been backported with this patch, or at least it was in a release six months ago. That's awesome!
This may be naive of me, but I presume Taito has access to some sort of currency with which to hire a digital artist for colorizing old photos, if they no longer employ any.
It looks great, but if I was gonna spend that much, I think I'd want to spend a little more and get a device without any personal concessions. Two OLEDs, no pinching of the screens by the frame, better D-pad, and autostereoscopic 3D. Yeah, I'm one of the weirdos who enjoys the effect and would want a FULL 3DS replacement for that amount of money.
I'd love to have one of these someday. The idea is so whimsical and interesting. Limitations do breed inventiveness, but to design and market a handheld around that is very cool.
I have such a fondness for this series. The first game's GBA release (along with Golden Sun and Klonoa: Empire of Dreams) got me through a very long, morose road trip with my father to attend a relative's funeral when I was a kid. Those three games genuinely gave me some great memories to balance out the rest of the trip, which included getting distressed by seeing a dead body for the first time, exiting through a door that was NOT an exit, and immediately seeing a dead body for the second time, haha.
I posted something similar on the Nintendo Life article about this, but I'm really curious about the original developers. I couldn't really find much info about them; they just released three games and then scattered to the winds. I think it'd be interesting to know why some of these design decisions were made, like the isometric perspective.
That's absolutely fascinating that the artist just took raw ideas to produce the cover art, which in turned directly inspired an enemy (that the pixel artist did a fantastic job with)! I can't imagine that sort of design process ever being the case today.
Also, the link to the Konami logo feature is a treasure trove, as that article immediately links you to several more logo features! I've already bookmarked it to return to throughout the week. Great stuff.
"[T]he creator of modern Master System games" is a pretty cool thing to get to type. Certainly not something I'd imagine reading about when I was a kid.
Yeah, the title was genuinely a bit confusing for me, as well. I thought a bunch of local businesses were in danger or something. Glad to know it's just an auction!
