Re: Talking Point: Is There A Home Port You Prefer To The Arcade Original?

JayJ

Honestly I prefer a lot of home ports of old 90's fighting games to the arcade releases. In the case of games like Tekken 2 and 3 the home ports were just better looking, sounding, and more fully featured. With stuff like Capcom fighters the home ports were often just a lot more playable, because they would make the AI stupidly difficult and cheap in arcade versions.

Re: Anniversary: Sega Saturn, The Most Successful Console "Flop" Of All Time, Turns 30 Today

JayJ

The Saturn was a big flop in the US but a big success in Japan. Probably one of the most polarizing major consoles I can think of when it comes to that. I remember how nobody really wanted one, every kid I knew who was into video games went from a Genesis/SNES to a PS1/N64. Even as a Sega Genesis fan I skipped it, was mostly into PS1 that gen, and got a Dreamcast after it released. Even though the Dreamcast also flopped arguably it was a lot more popular than the Saturn ever was.

Re: Panic Pushes "Pause" On The Playdate Stereo Dock

I was always mildly interested in one of these but it seems like it would be little more than a novelty and I really think it would be hard to go back to a non-lit screen after having portables with screen lighting for so long.

Re: Nintendo Is Now Going After YouTube Accounts Which Show Its Games Being Emulated

JayJ

Going after people who distribute roms, sure, I guess they're entitled to protect their property when it comes to their own video games they own the rights to.

Going after anyone who puts up a youtube video of an emulated Nintendo game, come on Nintendo, a lot of these people might actually own the original games and simply use an emulator because it's far better for recording footage.

Re: "The Tourists Have Taken Everything" Laments Japanese Resident As Retro Runs Dry

JayJ

This sort of thing is just a product of the effect that all the scalpers, scammers, and opportunists have had on the retro gaming market these days. People buying up copies of old games to jack up the prices on them, rich people turning rated sealed video games into a money laundering scheme making it crazy overpriced, and just scammers and opportunists all over trying to get anything they can for them. A part of the problem is youtubers and social media influencers, another part is the Ebay/Amazon culture of selling stuff, the collecting scene has been ruined by all the people trying to make money off it, and it really sucks for all those gamers who just really had a passion for it. I'm glad I was into collecting before everything got so crazy.

Re: BAFTA Poll Declares Lara Croft The Most Iconic Video Game Character

JayJ

@Dramlin There is a good reason why I never really care about these gaming poll ranking results on gaming sites and services. They always seem to be massively skewed by whoever their main audience happens to be, which is often dominated by a collective niche that doesn't really represent the majority of consumers.

Re: Jack Thompson, The Man Who Tried To Ban GTA, Thinks Video Games Can Be Good, Actually

JayJ

@Zeebor15 True, corruption has become rampant with the changes in the industry and fears have shifted to different concerns. I always thought of Jack Thompson's crusade as having been misguided, but noble in intent. He simply fell upon the classic case of confusing correlation with causation. People trying to deal with violence in their lives or violent thoughts would be naturally drawn to violent media and video games being interactive has always provided a consequence free environment to exercise and vent their troubles. If anything video games provided a relief to people, which is something we have a far better understanding of today. I think the biggest issue with people like Thompson and their beliefs has always been their position as outsiders. Their lack of experience and knowledge when it came to video games generated beliefs guided by desperation and founded on fear. It is easy for people to fear what they do not understand, and the more desperate people get the more likely they are to make emotional and illogical conclusions. I feel like their desperation was a development of their desire to find a way to control a world they couldn't understand. I think that's why I have been so disappointed by industry insiders falling into this kind of behavior, I felt like they really should have known better.

Re: Jack Thompson, The Man Who Tried To Ban GTA, Thinks Video Games Can Be Good, Actually

JayJ

@Sketcz One of the biggest changes I have taken note of is how the gaming community reacted towards people like Jack Thompson vs how they react towards people trying to fight the censors today. Back in the days of Thompson, it seemed like the entire gaming community was united against him. Nobody liked what he was saying or trying to do and they all fought against him and his attempts to influence video games. Now a days it seems like half the gaming community is in cahoots with the censors and fighting for them, and that is especially bad when you look at the present state of the journalism and big gaming media where the people fighting for the censors seem to greatly outnumber and demonize those trying to fight against them. This has allowed the latest form of puritanism to influence video games and flourish in the industry, with those trying to fight it being largely stifled and silenced. It's no wonder there is so much discontent among gamers these days.
