Re: Pre-Orders Go Live For The Evercade Retro Handheld System

JayJ

@Savino Well that doesn't really say anything about you not being allowed to obtain a backup of content that you own, it is merely giving legal guidelines for creating backups where if you are making a backup it is only legal if you own the content and are keeping the backup in your sole possession. Basically that just backs up what I already said, how there is legislation in place that prevents you from distributing it openly, but it doesn't do anything to negate the legality of any backups in your possession if you own the original content regardless of how you obtained those backups.

Re: This Exclusive Evercade Console Is Looking Pretty In Black

JayJ

@brunojenso No worries I am sure some people such as yourself find value in this and that is great for you, it's just that I have always had a hard time finding this concept appealing. In any case I don't think you are going to get far trying to trash the Switch Lite in favor of promoting this console, regardless of whatever features or design decisions you don't like about the Switch Lite it is a far more fully featured console than this is and it has a far wider variety of games to offer which is simply an objective fact.

There is also the fact that with the Switch Lite you are buying a first party Nintendo handheld electronic which is a company with proven quality and standards. The Evercade is completely unproven when it comes to that and nobody knows how well made these are or how reliable they will be, and the game support is very questionable at best. This is just a niche product for people who are into obscure retro inspired gaming stuff from odd 3'rd party sources.

Re: This Exclusive Evercade Console Is Looking Pretty In Black

JayJ

Why are they still promoting this thing here? This sounds like a ridiculous handheld to be spending $150 on, especially right before the $200 Switch Lite releases. I have a lot of quality concerns with the Evercade and the whole concept seems outdated and unnecessary. I already got most of the games it is offering on my Switch and the Switch has so much more to offer.

Re: Polymega TurboGrafx-16/PC Engine Module Includes Five Pack-In Games

JayJ

I have a lot of problems with this, and it's mostly that I never had a Turbographics-16 console so therefore I have nothing for it as far as the classic hardware goes. I mean I have plenty of Virtual Console TG-16 games but none of the original physical games.

This means that not only would I have to pay $300 for the system and $60 for the module, but I would need to shell out for ebay prices and try to source original copies of whatever games I am interested in. As somebody who has collected a lot of older games for other consoles I am well aware of how expensive and time consuming that can be.

Basically, this entire concept only works for people who have been collectors and are looking for a new way to play their old collections. Since I have collected for consoles like the SNES I would probably be very interested in that, but then again my original SNES is in great shape, I don't really have any issues playing the games, and there are other more proven, far cheaper options out there.

Re: The Evercade Handheld's First Collection Of Retro-Style Indie Games Has Been Revealed

JayJ

@MagnaRoader Yeah I don't get why some people are so sensitive about criticism. I mean I get how it can become toxic when uncalled for but this is one of those situations where there are valid reasons for criticism. This site could do a better job when it comes to Switch coverage, and seeing as how this is a site dedicated to Nintendo that comes off as a valid observation. As for this handheld it is not only unrelated to anything Nintendo but it is just some concept that will most likely hardly appeal to anyone. I am sure there are more dedicated sites than this for discussing it anyways.

Re: The Evercade Handheld System Will Get New Retro-Style Indie Games, As Well As Old Classics

JayJ

@Filbert_Wang If you think this thing will have widespread appeal you are only fooling yourself. At best this will probably sell like the Ouya, lots of initial interest and early sales from the early adopter type of enthusiasts, but they will probably only be able to appeal to just that one crowd.

I mean yeah, retro gaming is a big thing but the problem with that is how it is a very crowded marketplace these days and this is very far from being the only way to play these games. I mean I got the Atari collection on my Switch which has a lot to do with why I am not interested. I love classics but I won't be rushing out to buy this because it just doesn't do anything special.

Re: The Evercade Handheld System Will Get New Retro-Style Indie Games, As Well As Old Classics

JayJ

@Heavyarms55 Yeah that is a handheld that I have been looking for as well. Essentially just a first generation GBA kind of design but with a nice adjustable backlit screen. Let me play roms as well as original cartridges and I would have nothing to complain about.

That is why I mentioned the Neo Geo X, this device basically just feels like the same kind of thing only less interesting.

Re: Introducing The Playdate, Panic's New Handheld Video Game System With A Crank

JayJ

@Ooyah That is what I was thinking, I honestly just assumed the crank would be used to power it because when you think about it having a hand crank powered game console could be really useful in some situations where power is in short supply.

They could come up with some fun little games to play while you are cranking it for power, seems like a real missed opportunity to not capture any energy.

Re: Hardware Review: SNK Neo Geo Mini International Edition - Different Design, Different Games, Same Problems?

JayJ

I got the international just because it is cheaper and easier, but it is honestly kind of a novelty console for me. I have pretty much all the ACA games on the Switch as well as the Hori arcade stick for the Switch which is by far the best way to play these games. Problem with that is how the arcade stick alone costs more than the entire Neo Geo Mini and the games can really add up over time. Personally I don't mind because I always wanted to collect Neo Geo games but I couldn't justify the cost of buying the original hardware and games off Ebay, and despite how it can be a little pricey to have this setup on the Switch it is a fantastic bargain in comparison.

It is also worth noting how the ACA Neo Geo games for Switch are definitely superior versions of these games in comparison to what you get with the Neo Geo Mini. My biggest complaint about the Neo Geo Mini is how you are getting the AES home system ports without any ability to customize them in terms of difficulty, credits, censorship, and so on (although there is a few exceptions when it comes to difficulty), and most of the games are censored. With the ACA Switch games you have a full range of options for customization, you can disable censorship, and there is a much better selection.

Re: Feature: How Mortal Kombat Defined The Console War Between Sega And Nintendo

JayJ

@Ryu_Niiyama I never cared for the games either, and I also grew up in the 90's and had a 16-bit console as my first console. The draw to Mortal Kombat was always the gore and violence for it's era, back then it was pretty unusual for a game to be that violent and it stood out to kids for how edgy and cool it was. The games were never all that great looking back, but the type of kids who loved anything edgy hyped it up.

Re: Polymega Launch Trailer Reveals Sega Saturn Support

JayJ

This is a great thing considering how unlike cartridge based consoles, old CD based consoles often suffer from issues where the console can't read it's media well anymore. CD drives are notoriously unreliable and having a good way to replace them would be nice.

Re: Hardware Classics: Unpacking The 32X, Sega's Most Catastrophic Console Failure

JayJ

@BulbasaurusRex Lol @ trying to downplay the severity of the 32X's hardware failures. If it was so easy to get working, why was it notorious for not working? Why did AVGN have an entire episode dedicated to the 32X that mainly involved him ordering the thing, getting ones that were broken, and trying to get a hardware expert to fix one for him and get it actually working, which apparently turned out to be quite the project.

There is just no honest defense for the 32X, it is like trying to defend the Virtual Boy. At the end of the day, even if you are a fan of failed and obscure game consoles, you gotta admit how it had some serious faults that can't be ignored or simply brushed over or otherwise simplified.

As for Sega of Japan, there is a very good reason why they never endorsed the 32X or wanted to contribute anything to it, all while Sega of America was really big on trying to market it. Anyone who knows about Sega at the time knows how Sega of Japan was trying to develop a new console while Sega of America was trying to keep the whole upgraded console thing going. It was a part of their whole plan, Sega of America didn't even have anything to do with the Saturn because of it, and the Saturn wound up selling quite poorly in the USA while it sold quite well in Japan.

In the end the way things went down speaks volumes about what was going on. Sega of Japan was focused on making something better, I mean they are the people who originally developed the Mega Drive after all, and they later developed the Dreamcast, so it is pretty safe to say that they were responsible for everything good that Sega was known for.

In comparison Sega of America was known for... Genesis marketing and the 32X. Sega of America was great at marketing a 16-bit game console, but they were terrible at developing new hardware.

Re: Hardware Classics: Unpacking The 32X, Sega's Most Catastrophic Console Failure

JayJ

@Maulbert lol @ trying to make an argument that the 32X was anything besides a bad idea from the division of Sega that was always responsible for the bad decisions: Sega of America.

There is no way that you can honestly blame the failure of the 32X on Sega of Japan, who was opposed to the idea. The 32X was a failure by design. It's add-on nature was stupid and poorly thought out. It was far too complicated, it only offered a marginal improvement to the graphics, it has awful sound quality that did nothing to improve upon the standard Genesis sound, it was just a bad product that was honestly doomed the minute it got greenlit.
