Back in the early '90s, Sega and Nintendo were bitter enemies, with their respective consoles fighting for dominance of living rooms all over the globe. There may be some of you who still consider this battle to be unfinished business, even in 2020, which is why My Arcade's Super Retro Champ could be a remarkable product.
This bulky handheld plays SNES and Genesis / Mega Drive cartridges, finally uniting the two opposing formats after decades of war (we'll conveniently ignore the fact that other consoles, like the Retron 5 and Retro Freak achieved this goal some time ago).
With a 7-inch screen, 5 hours of battery life and the ability to connect to your TV, the Super Retro Champ could be quite an interesting product – although even at over $100, we're not sure it will be able to compete with the likes of the Analogue Super Nt and Mega Sg when it comes to emulation quality.

That control layout looks not very suited to the Sega games at all.
Thanks, I hate it.
Yeah, that layout of the controller doesn't say Mega Drive at all.
So no thanks
I'm not sure who this is for. Enthusiasts with SNES or Mega Drive cartridges (or flash carts) are going to want a nicer system than this.
Megadrive is very much an after thought here.
Depending on the pricetag I might be interested
Looks like a switch that was built in the 90s. I kinda like it
@SpookyPotato
Yeah it does doesn't it ?
Didn't think I'd ever see a hybrid more uncomfortable looking than the Nomad, but there you go.
I don't think that Nintendo's lawyers will be happy if this catches their eye.
@SmileMan64 Actually it's perfectly fine to build a device that can play somebody else's cartridge.
Also, ew. The big thing looks impossible to hold comfortably because the sides are so tall.
In before crappy emulation
As Others and I mentioned before with the Success of the Switch. Now others are trying to claim the mantel of Innovation by try to feed off Switch success. This is so laughable and so sad along with being pathetic-trying to leak off the Switch success. This is why I talked about Nintendo Innovations knowing full well there would be Lechers trying to feed off Switch Success and Design. But it brings into another focus.
1. Buyers want Portable and Docking gaming experiences
2. They want affordable gaming on the go-not Smart Phone gaming
3. Price always come down to price.
Nintendo won the war when Sega made games for Nintendo systems (the pico doesn't count)
@Ralizah
Uh, you ever seen the r-zone ?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/R-Zone
@SmileMan64
Its a tablet with controllers attached to it. I don't think Nintendo has the monopoly on that design
Granted it looks more like a Udraw tablet but still.
@KitsuneNight I haven't, actually. It'd depend on the thickness, though.
Have you ever held a Nomad? The thing feels like gaming on a literal brick.
Some giant sideways tablet with buttons would still be worse, though.
Interesting closing comment: ... [A]lthough even at over $100, we're not sure it will be able to compete with the likes of the Analogue Super Nt and Mega Sg when it comes to emulation quality.
The two systems mentioned by Analogue are close to $200 (USD) each. This is about half the cost of one of those systems and one-quarter the cost of both. If it does an adequate job, there will probably be some market for it.
Looks freaking ugly and those controllers are awfully design. Considering it's a clone on a chip handheld, a number of games will probably not work on it likely Virtua Racing, Super Mario RPG, and Star Ocean. Also it using a 16:9 over a 4:3 aspect ratio kill it for me if Sega Genesis and Super NES games are all it supported. Why do clone maker tend to use 16:9 as default when they're not even supporting HDMI output nor had the option to turn it to 4:3? This is just another Chinese garbage that is trying to cater to those die hard retro gamers that still can't let go of those CRT display.
@Ralizah
I squinted and an Game Gear and at an Atari Lynx
Talk about bricks
The Lynx was HUGE.
I’ll stick with the original hardware, thanks and my neogeo x.
Can the buttons be remapped?
Was the SNES vs Genesis console wars really a thing on playgrounds back in the day? In my school, no one cared about which console you owned. Everyone acknowledged that the two had great games. PS1 vs N64, now THAT was a console war. The N64 was a "kiddie" console and PS1 was for the mature gamers. I stand by my N64 to this day.
"(we'll conveniently ignore the fact that other consoles, like the Retron 5 and Retro Freak achieved this goal some time ago)"
Then why did you "waste your time" writing an article about this?
This is the kind of thing that would have been a lot cooler about 10 years ago.
Unless it can dump the roms of your games, this holds no interest to me. It would be too bulky to play on the go and there are better options on TV. If I were to buy a clone console, Analogue is the only choice worth considering.
@technotreegrass If you grew up throughout the 90s, talks of the Super NES vs. Genesis is everywhere. On tv, in magazines, at the playground, after school, in the arcade, at the shopping mall, etc. Me and my friends use to argue which arcade game would hit home console next, he bet on Genesis and I bet on Super NES: Final Fight got SNES port, them Strider got Genesis port, then Knights of the Round got SNES port then Merc got Genesis port then Sunset Riders got ported to both but I told him the SNES version is the better one. Things started to go beyond that when SNES got 3D style games like Donkey Kong Country while Genesis still releasing old 2D sprite based games like Comix Zone. It was a fun era to be a gamer at the time. To us Sega was like WCW and Nintendo was like the WWF.
@retro_player_22 Yeah I was 7 when the Sega Genesis and the Super Nintendo shared market space and I remember all the commercials that established a console war, but in my personal experience, there was no "You own a SNES (or Genesis), you suck. My console is clearly superior." talk on my playground. Everyone knew who had what console and friendships were born as kids went over someone's house who had the opposite console so they could play. It was very peaceful and friendly.
