If you follow the retro gaming scene closely, then the name Arcade1Up will instantly ring a bell. This relatively new company scored a sizeable coup by gaining the licence to create an arcade cabinet containing Konami’s classic Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles arcade game, and it has followed up that release with a series of other cabinets, including titles such as Marvel vs. Capcom, Pac-Man, Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter II.
The company is at CES showing off its latest line of games, as well as digital pinball machines and plug-and-play systems. However, gamers of a certain vintage will be most interested in the new NBA Jam cabinet, which comes in a four-player configuration and has the ability to host online games so you’re never short of someone to hop on the court with. The cab includes the original game as well as NBA Jam Tournament Edition and NBA Hangtime. The price hasn’t been confirmed, but an Arcade1Up representative says it should be between $399 and $499.
What really caught our eye, however, is the news that Arcade1Up is working on a cabinet with Sega which includes Golden Axe: Revenge of Death Adder, a 1992 arcade release which has never been ported to any home system.
The cab – which is expected to launch this May – also includes the arcade versions of Altered Beast, Shinobi, Wrestle War and the original Golden Axe. These games are basically officially-licenced ROMs running via emulation, but still, it’s impressive to note that Revenge of Death Adder – arguably the zenith of that cult series – is finally getting another release after all these years.
However, is it worth dropping 400 bucks on a massive machine in order to play it? That’s for you to decide, and we hope that the fact that it’s happening means that Sega could potentially be releasing it on other platforms, such as the Switch, via its Sega Ages range.
Cross those finger (and those swords).

Sounds like they don't have approval for the NBA Jam one just yet.
This has literally nothing to do with Nintendo
It's cool that the first few Marvel vs Capcom games are getting rereleased. I hope that means they can port then to modern systems!
I was very surprised when I saw this from the coverage of the event. I do really hope however that they do make this part of SEGA AGES because it would kind of suck if the game was locked to a $400 at home arcade cabinet, even Arcade1Up's quality is very good
Would be cool if someone ports that Arcade game to the SWITCH
I'm with @BustahWolf, I don't see the connection between this and Nintendo. Maybe there's just something I'm missing?
Time Crisis 1 and Daytona USA cabs plz!
@BustahWolf That's an annoying habit on NintendoLife. At this point, I wouldn't be surprised if one of the editors posts an article here about a piece of dried-up steak that resembles Pac-Man. The only reason I still come here is because it still has more information than most Nintendo news sites.
It would be cool if Golden Axe: The Revenge of Death like the headline was implying though.
@Kalmaro I'm guessing it's filler. It's kinda sorta an interesting article, but yeah, it's not relevant.
Revenge of Death Adder is genuinely great, a real lost SEGA arcade gem. That SEGA have re-released the other Golden Axe games countless times, but never this one, is maddening and baffling.
@BustahWolf
a) So what?
b) It might come to SEGA AGES someday
c) If it doesn't interest you, then read something else and stop whining.
@DrDaisy Sounds like you should try another website then. Personally I like the diverse mix of articles.
@BustahWolf
You mean all those other games that are not made by Nintendo but are on their platforms ?
Would be a pretty damn small line up of articles, if it was about Nintendo only.
Guess you never heard of Sega Ages either.
Sega is really dragging ass with the Sega Ages line so my feeling is that IF we ever see Revenge Of Death Adder, which would be awesome, it’ll be a long long time!! I’m wondering what the hell is even taking Fantasy Zone & G-Loc so long!! They should be cranking them out by now cmon Sega!!
I would be interested to know what year of NBA players this will be (preference would be 1996, like the Saturn TE NBA Jam)
I would love for Arcade 1UP Arcades at home, but would not have room for them - though I would make room for the Star Wars 1UP Arcade.
Sega need to add GA2 to Sega Ages. Come on, Chop Chop
@Damo I promise this isn't a criticism, I was just hoping for clarification on how this is Nintendo-related.
@ramu-chan But it's "Nintendo" Life, shouldn't the stuff be about Nintendo?
And perhaps this article is, in not seeing the connection though,
Arcade1Up haven't released any new cabs in the UK for quite some time, so perhaps a notice on news stories in future for those who stand no chance of getting hold of them?
Such a pleasant comment section, you all must be great at parties!
These things are cool, they have them on display at my local Walmart. I would definitely get one if they made an all in one version with like 20 or so games bundled in.
Revenge of Death Adder I would argue is better than the first games, it is a very awesome playthrough. If you haven't just get MAME and play it on PC first if you are interested in the cabinet.
@Kalmaro Unfortunately Nintendo doesn't have enough news to supplement every news story so to keep these wonderful people working they have to make more than just Nintendo posts.
Has nothing to do with Nintendo, but I don’t care about that. This site covers retro stuff anyways. I actually like Arcade 1up. I have the Marvel arcade that includes Punisher, X-Men Children of the Atom, and Marvel Super Hero’s. This was my first time playing Punisher and I gotta say it’s one of my favorite beat em ups now.
I enjoy the articles despite knowing i likely wont buy these mini cabs.. I tried four player tmnt and to me it was too small...
Why do i like these articles. Because there are so many people who say Nintendo cant release Goldeneye. Or this cant be released or that cant be released. I only heard of 1up arcade about a year ago but this small company has managed to figure out all sorts of licensing issues. If there is a will there is a way. These games (TMNT please!!!) should be able to find a home on the Switch. 1up make it happen. Hamster make it happen. Nintendo figure out your microsoft issues and bond licensing and make Goldeneye happen!
@Jokerwolf You say that but I can see other Nintendo sites with news right now, like the direct happening soon.
@Kalmaro As several other people have pointed out to you already, Sega is a big supporter of Switch, not just via third-party games but also via the Sega Ages range (which, at the time of writing at least, is Switch-exclusive). The fact that Revenge of Death Adder is finally seeing a re-release could be a huge hint that it's heading to Switch in the fullness of time.
I'm actually dog-tired of having to explain this stance, but we cover a LOT more than just 'pure' Nintendo news on this site, and have done literally since it began. Sega and Nintendo are two very closely-connected companies (with Nintendo even going as far as to publish some of Sega's games in recent years) – and we've not even touched upon the point that this post also mentions NBA Jam, a game whose popularity was closely tied to the robust commercial performance of its SNES conversion.
Sega Ages on Switch is a bit of a disappointment. They should be onto their 90s Arcade games (especially the ones that never got home conversions), and Saturn/Dreamcast stuff by now. Virtual Racing was great but they need to do more like that.
I’m not going to buy Sonic and Puyo Puyo again, but I’ve got plenty of money waiting for Death Adder, Scud Race, Daytona 2, Super GT, Planet Harriers and stuff like Manx TT, Sega Rally, House of Dead if they can improve on them like they did with VR
@electrolite77 It pains me the potential that currently lies untapped within the Sega Ages range - but then again, these projects cost money and by all accounts, sales haven't been that amazing for the Sega Ages titles released so far.
@Damo Hmm? No one has pointed that out to me, I appreciate you expanding on your reasoning for making the article though. It would be nice if we got more Sega classics.
@Kalmaro if you’ve been around long enough (like the days of James Newton), you’ll know that Nintendolife is also secretly Segalife. Not really a surprise for a UK based site
I remember trying out Arcade1Up Capcom's Marvel Super Heroes arcade cabinet just last year. The games they include are The Punisher, X-Men: Children of the Atom and of course Marvel Super Heroes. And what I like about the Arcade1Up arcade cabinets is that you don't have to chunk in quarters if you get a game over all you have to do is press the star button to start the game again. I long for the day we see them release cabinets that feature 3D arcade games for example the original three Cruis'n games, California Speed, Hydro Thunder and many more.
I’m genuinely surprised to see Revenge of Death Adder make it’s first comeback as one of these cabinets. But not surprised because Sega today seems distant from its roots, very sadly
I got the mortal kombat and turtles
I will be getting the NBA jam
Wrestle War is totally out of place on that cab. A better 3-button addition would have been Alien Storm or something
I sadly don't have the space for the cabinets but I would love Death Adder on the Switch. NBA Jam too if they manage to sort all the licensing issues with teams and players, but I'd be happy if they went the Tecmo Super Bowl route and created interesting fake teams and players and kept the announcer.
I've said it before, but it could use repeating. I like the non-Nintendo articles this site posts and have learned of many non-Nintendo things of interest to me from them. It is a far cry from simply being a multi-platform site that provides release lists and previews of PS4 and XBone. If they did that, I wouldn't like it either, but that is not what they do. But Nintendolife is highlighting things that have a clear appeal to many people who visit a site like this. In this case, it is Sega that has a long history with Nintendo. And it is a game many people here may want to know about. This may also be a sign that this game could be available in the future on home systems. It's not hard to see that there is crossover appeal with articles like this.
I love coming to this site more than push square due to Nintendo life’s more open nature. It’s mostly Nintendo, but this site isn’t afraid to cover broader topics and gaming as a whole. Instead of questioning relevance of an article, this community should be grateful for more news. I think it would be a shame if this sort of content were eliminated. @damo keep it up
That being said, I’m super interested in that NBA Jam cabinet. I’m almost always an “original hardware” kind of guy, but It seems like Arcade 1up is really digging in to this market and upping the quality also with some of these niche releases like Death Adder.
Edit: remember also that there are many older Nintendo gamers (like me) who have a huge interest in retro and exploring earlier roots of gaming. This site does great at that.
@flummerfelt ya Death adder is a deep cut for Arcade 1up. It’s definitely the opposite of TMNT and going for the niche, enthusiast crowd. Their first product that’s really caught my attention
NBA Hangtime? Man, If only I had the space for these machines
@sleepinglion Agree 100%. Or even a more obscure one, like DD Crew or Arabian Fight. Having said that, I don't think the arcade version of Wrestle War has ever been ported to any other platform, so that's nice, at least.
@sdelfin
@BustahWolf Worst yet Revenge of Death Adder aren't even a SEGA AGES game it's games like that they should be going for not, some random puzzle games or games like Sonic 1 we already have a ton of already
@LaytonPuzzle27 - I've posted my request to Arcade1Up (not that they read the request) to make a "Thunder Trilogy" cabinet with: Hydro, Off Road and Arctic Thunder.
A San Francisco Rush cabinet would be fantastic, too, with: Rush the Rock and Rush 2049.
Revenge of Death Adder is a solid game and really needs to come to Switch as a Sega Ages title or something like that.
Sega should just be sell their 16bit arcade games off to Hamster so we could get on with it and then focus on dreamcast Naomi for their Sega Ages line.
I wonder if 1UP will ever get Daytona? A 1UP Arcade with a Steering Wheel, Gear Box, Pedels. With Daytona and Sega Rally......
By Crom, I'm still hoping that the Golden Axe arcade games will be available for the Switch one day. I already got the first one as a Wii Virtual Console title, but after so many years, it would be nearly sensational to see the sequel being released on other platforms.
@flummerfelt Thanks for the support!
@Damo Yeah, because they're not releasing games people want. They can't be so dense as to not understand that the older Sega fans want Virtual Fighter 2 and beyond. There's no way they thought the younger crowd was going to buy what they've put out so far. Or maybe they foolishly did?
Speaking of Sega Ages, Shinobi and Fantasy Zone have appeared on the UK eShop for 23rd January release @Damo
@Gerald Yep, we'll be covering that later
The online multiplayer is gonna make these games really good.
@SuperToe Here is an ambitious project for Arcade1Up for them to make. Make a arcade cabinet NFL Blitz, NFL Blitz 99, and NFL Blitz 2000 Gold Edition with capability Nintendo 64 memory cards slot for the N64 versions of NFL Blitz games.
Annoyingly the first wave failed to sell well in the UK, so most stockists have passed on stocking this much better second wave...Turtles, Marvel vs, Mortal Kombat, etc.
I’ve contacted Arcade1up to see if they have any UK stockists for the second wave and they said none yet
@LaytonPuzzle27 - They could certainly pull that off... minus the N64 feature.
I own the Asteroids 1up cab I bought from very.com. but looks like we wont be getting anything else over here in the UK. Obviously the States get all the love like the starwars cab etc. But trying to import these things over would cost a fortune in postage I've looked into it.
NintendoLife editors: maybe just me, but I love seeing an article every one and then that isn’t strictly Nintendo rated. Keep up the good work.
Man oh man! I SO wish I had the room for one of these babies!
@flummerfelt Well said flummerfelt.
@DrDaisy
Cause its you know a game, that might appear on Nintendo's PLATFORM ?
That too tenuous a connection?
@SuperToe NFL Blitz 99 had a N64 memory card slot . Speaking of that it would awesome for Arcade1up make F-Zero AX cabinets for those who love F-Zero GX.
@Damo
I’ve presumed,with these kind of articles you just simply know the adult Switch market and also with being British and all, well, Sega.
Prime example: I clicked on this article. I’ve skipped over every single one that mentions Pokemon or Smash Brothers.
@Damo
So I believe. It’s probably a chicken and egg situation where the low sales are reflecting the uninspired or repetitive choices. But I can understand if it makes them reluctant to commit too many resources to it.
@Damo
Totally behind you on the articles that aren’t directly Nintendo. I love all the Retro games stuff you do. One of the best things about the site. I’ve no interest in all the Pokemon stuff for example yet I’m on this article.
@sixrings
I have a dream that the new found friendliness between Nintendo and Microsoft will one day lead to them sorting out the rights and putting out a Remaster of Goldeneye with cross-platform multiplayer. Alas, just a dream.
“ Sega should just be sell their 16bit arcade games off to Hamster so we could get on with it and then focus on dreamcast Naomi for their Sega Ages line.” Good idea. Anything that helps them get on with it is welcome. They’re sitting on such a treasure trove.
@Damo if you had to play a final fantasy from 7 to 9 this year which would you play?
@Damo Right on, man. I don't understand the logic behind Sega's AGES line. Arcade1UP is starting with the Golden Axe titles while AGES is busy slowly dripping out some fairly obscure ones and hasn't featured Golden Axe, Altered Beast or most of the 80s arcade hits
@robr
@electrolite77 Cheers!
@ryobi85 I'd play Final Fantasy Tactics instead
@sleepinglion Hopefully Sega will see the interest and wise up!
I remember that.! a friend many years ago went on how tough it was.is it a good game never gave it a go?
@KitsuneNight Don't be a jerk.
It starts with a few irrelevant articles, but then the site goes MTV and then less than 50% of the articles have anything to do with Nintendo. I get that some of you are creatures of habits though and probably choose this as your primary entertainment site. Yeah, I could just go somewhere else like GoNintendo, which I often do, but it's sad for me to see the site go downhill. It's had problems before, but at least it used to be more relevant. Now it seems like editors such as Liam Dolan and Damien McFerran are using it to post whatever their personal interests are regardless of what it is. If most of you actually like that, fine, but don't get all condescending just because some of us don't.
@LaytonPuzzle27 - Of course you realize if A1U acquires the F-Zero license, that means they're working with Nintendo, which could only lead to... wait for it... Donkey Kong! DK Junior! DK3! Mario Bros!
Oh, and a little game called POPEYE!!
@DrDaisy @Kalmaro @BustahWolf take a chill pill
@First_Amendment No
Hell yes, bring on the cabinets!
