I want more retro style lucasfilm games. Thimbleweed Park was probably my favorite.

People drive up the cost of NES games that appear on AVGN, so why not a cheap re-release of this one? Sounds like the improvements maybe cause some issues tho…

@axelhander I’m scared too but some of it gets a little samey knee-jerky! Bethesda could announce 2005-era “radiant AI,” in all its 2006 janky glory, and it would be met with swears and “AI slop!” and insults.

@avcrypt Sure, but you're extrapolating if you mean replacing humans. Humans had to create Quake 2 so the AI could spend ages training on it, after all, then do... this. "Aiding" is the idea, at least at the moment.

Unfortunately, with the way "AAA" demands bigger and bigger budgets and more workers and longer dev cycles, in order to deliver better graphics, AI will be seen as the way to do it... sort of like outsourcing for clothing/etc manufacturing to meet demand and keep prices low.

This isn’t supposed to be a demo of game creation. It’s supposed to be a rough demo of AI frame generation. People are missing the point.

Here we were arguing about super Mario bros, and shenmue takes it. And kingdom come 2 and baldurs gate 3 take the piss.

I still think Adventure should have won.

It’s really sad the way the internet is now used for group bullying when people feel they’re entitled because they didn’t get the first item off the assembly line or someone has blue hair or isn’t their gender.

Don’t forget the super Mario rpg soundtrack. Even without kingdom hearts at all, she came out of the gate with genius soundtracks.

I tried to like it back then (after being a little disappointed in some ways by ff7), and I just never could.

I’m holding out for the next mister batch that comes pre assembled. I actually kinda like their interface better too. But maybe I’ll end up having to wait so long I’ll get whatever comes after this instead.

It just seems like the mister pi is a little easier to run multiple cores on than the superstation.

I’d guess they’re probably going to be a publisher of other stuff as much as they are an acclaim ip revival house. They already published dead tomb on Xbox. I’d be happy with more stuff like that, solid fake retro stuff.

How do we know this is a new thing and that they didn’t do this 35 years ago too? It seems to be caused by heat, not age.

I thought the ad was really cool, but I was like 3… It definitely made me think Zelda was some awesome mysterious thing, and Zelda 1 is.

That said, rewatching it now, it’s not as neat as I remember 😂

However, I said Super Mario Bros and presented an argument for that.

@sdelfin Super Mario Bros has a bearing on something like R-Type because Super Mario Bros was one of the first games to really do horizontal scrolling well.

@GeneJacket That's a bummer! It ends up hurting their playerbase, since there are like no wireless Xbox controllers except the official one... which is a pretty good controller but is the only controller in the history of the world to give me hand cramps. I used an Xbox One controller til it got horrible stick drift (first time that's ever happened to me, too).

They sometimes make themselves hard to defend. But it does get old seeing the never-changing commentary of habitual hatred every time they’re mentioned.

It’s crazy to me that these things aren’t wireless on Xbox when they’re Xbox controllers. I’m still using a wired 8-bitdo on my series x. Don’t need anything for my switch!

Although the difficulty is often higher in retro games, there’s way less clutter and junk going on.

@Bakamoichigei Assuming you get one with a drive belt that works and can get (and install) a replacement if not. They're not as solid and everlasting as the Famicom itself.

Really depends what the thing costs tho, and what the games cost. And if it can capture the magic without a keyboard. No keyboard means no zork I’d guess!

I remember thinking something like this would be cool way back when the first Amazon kindle got released. The first kindle actually had a keyboard, unlike this. But I believe this does have an e-ink screen.

@Angelus3K compared to what we’re used to now, dvds are laboriously slow, and I can’t imagine the ps2 has some kind of super fast optical drive. (That said, it could have been possible that the memory card read is slow since it never had to transfer much data, but happily, it apparently isn’t.)

Can you run ps1 games on it like this too?

I’m not sure there are any ps2 games I want to play that I can’t play elsewhere better and more easily. But there are ps1 games!

@Steel76 It's too bad they can't do a Rebirth collection of some kind. I suppose that would be impossible with licensing.

I really wish more of these games would get English releases. There’s still a lot of Japanese stuff we’ve never seen in English. I get that it’s a niche within a niche but…
