@KingMike you mean the original square soft English translation of ff4? That was done by one lady, as far as I know. She did her best. Or, maybe there is more to the story than I ever heard? I’d be interested to know.
@Sketcz yeah I still wanna play mega cd shadowrun too! Woulda been able to learn Japanese and play it by this point lol (which I am currently doing and probably still will be able to by the time it’s finally done sheesh)
Seriously? No Xbox version? I still have the GBA cart, but I woulda bought it day one with rewards points. It’ll have to wait til I dust off my switch or ps5.
@mossrc that sounds fantastic! Definitely hoping for the best for you guys. It was such an era. The earliest games (before they switched to being LucasArts) hold such a special interest for me.
Well, uematsu was always on the cutting edge of composition, not necessarily of synthesis. Koshiro is a genius of both and simply learned how to use the super Famicom sound chip and samples first. Even the ff7 soundtrack is not really that advanced, simply using the ps1’s onboard midi.
I’d love to hear what ffiv sounded like before this happened and they changed the samples. Actraiser is a masterpiece of composition and design, but ffiv is right up there with it.
Koshiro mastered the mega drive fm sound chip too. No one else could quite get to his level.
I wish they’d redesign the Brick. It’s a great form factor with a great screen, but the audio is awful, the limbo mode thing is unacceptable, and the battery life is bad.
I hope it’s some interesting info about each game for people who’ve actually played most of the games; not a bunch of mini “reviews” for people who haven’t played them.
Wish things would turn up for the guy and he could regain his health. That’s more important than anything. Wishing him the very best. So sad this is happening to him.
@_Ex_ Woops, turns out I lied to you. They are 3.95" and 4" screens, not 6" (or 7"); they're 4:3, however, and 640x480. And well-regarded! 4" ends up feeling pretty big on a 4:3 at 640x480.
@axelhander Not everyone has access to the outside...? It can also be... a lamp...
The reason it costs more is because it's not being made by a gigantic megacorporation that can make a billion of them and source a ton of cheap parts. It is a niche device, for sure. I don't get why everyone is so mad about it being niche.
@axelhander there are benefits to having a reflective screen, like being able to see it outdoors, and having huge battery life. Game Boy Color and GBA look great outside. Backlit GBA SP is not viewable outdoors at all. (Front lit GBA SP is.)
@NoirConceit well considering it’s a Spanish/Portuguese word, a lot more people pronounce it in the Spanish/Portuguese way. Why would it be a different pronunciation for the computer versus the actual word?
That said, shipping is slow and expensive to compensate for tariffs. So this is really a $150 console (and is worth it). There’s nothing else quite like it without spending a lot more.
I’m happy with my grey one, which looks a lot like the OG dmg. This black one does not really scream mega drive to me…

@RolyTheBeerGeek you played the Japanese game as a kid??
Re: Nihon Falcom Announces Dragon Slayer 45th Anniversary Project
I think there were turn based entries as well.
Wish they’d release a collection too!

But maybe you mean a fan translation

Re: New Documentary Project 'Passport To Adventure' To Shine A Spotlight On Lucasfilm's SCUMM Engine
Too bad they can’t talk about more games, maybe ones that haven’t been talked about as much, like Indy 3 and 4, Zak, loom…
Re: Kunio-kun And River City Ransom Composer Kazuo Sawa Has Passed Away
That’s a bummer. He wrote some of the best Famicom music. River city ransom is a masterpiece, but all his soundtracks were. So vibey.
He also snuck the double dragon theme into River city ransom, which blew my mind as a kid.
Re: "They Really Hated It" - The Battle To Get British English Into Dragon Quest VIII
@turboxray It's a Japanese game!
Re: "They Really Hated It" - The Battle To Get British English Into Dragon Quest VIII
@Xerox1919 jeez. Did he kidnap your cat too? It’s not like the original Japanese text isn’t also corny.
Re: "They Really Hated It" - The Battle To Get British English Into Dragon Quest VIII
Alpha Plus and Matt Alt are both great. I think I’ve heard them both on retronauts.
Re: "They Really Hated It" - The Battle To Get British English Into Dragon Quest VIII
American English would have been odd. But either way, so much quintessential Japanese quirk is lost in localization more so than in translation

Gawd. And this isn’t even the most reprehensible of his opinions apparently.
Not that anyone needs my opinion, but I always thought EWJ was an overrated trash game and a crap character. 😈

We don’t know it’ll be a trash translation until we can inspect it.
Re: Anbernic's New Controller Has A Built-In HD Screen, Capacitive Sticks And (Gulp) A Heart Rate Alarm
It’s probably going to cost $150+, for weird features no one wanted.
It doesn’t even work on ps5 and Xbox.
I wish someone would just make a really good simple basic wireless controller that worked on everything and was $50.

Widescreen seems like a waste to me when it’s mostly designed for ps1 and below.

FFX was the last real FF. Best combat system in the series too.

Re: AYANEO's 'Code R' Promises To Be An "Entry-Level, High-Value" Retro Handheld
Is the Konkr also 4:3? If this is 4:3 and cheaper, I don’t think it will overlap. The konkr has a weird name and is too expensive.

Re: Review: Retroid Pocket Classic 6 - The Portable Sega Saturn I've Always Wanted
I haven’t missed the analog stick on mine at all, but I also don’t really play anything that needs a stick.
There are some virtual sticks for emergencies, which work fine for games that only make light use of a stick.
Re: Review: Retroid Pocket Classic 6 - The Portable Sega Saturn I've Always Wanted
@_Ex_ don’t knock it til you try it. It’s a pretty big screen.
Have you tried anbernics 6” 640x480 stuff? Or one of their units with a square screen?
Re: Review: Retroid Pocket Classic 6 - The Portable Sega Saturn I've Always Wanted
Realistically it’s $150, not $120, at least for US customers. It needs to be shipped, and they make up for tariffs with shipping. Still well worth it.
I have the 4 button version and love it. My only struggle was Saturn emulation ironically, but I’ll try that emulator.
Re: AYANEO's New "Budget Friendly" Handheld, The Konkr Pocket Fit, To Cost Less Than $369
Konkr is a horrible name, but I certainly wish them luck.
<$369, so $368.99?
I couldn’t get the specs screenshot to work. What size is it? Does it actually fit in pockets?
It seems a little overpowered for what I’d want personally (ps1 and below, 4:3)

Re: CrankBoy Is A Playdate Game Boy Emulator With Impressive Performance
So how does this work exactly? You side load it? Or do you need to do other fancy stuff?
Re: CrankBoy Is A Playdate Game Boy Emulator With Impressive Performance
@axelhander there are benefits to having a reflective screen, like being able to see it outdoors, and having huge battery life. Game Boy Color and GBA look great outside. Backlit GBA SP is not viewable outdoors at all. (Front lit GBA SP is.)

British and Americans both suck at pronouncing foreign words.

Re: The Sega Mega Drive / Genesis-Themed Retroid Pocket Classic 6 SG Is Now Available
@lordlad what emulator do you use to run Saturn? I’ve tried three and each had issues. Meanwhile everything else I’ve tried runs great.

I’ve got the grey 4-button variant and love it.
