PS1 and Saturn both had ugly 3D 😂 i fantasize about an alternate timeline where the Saturn was allowed to be a 2d powerhouse and crappy rudimentary 3D wasn’t all the rage.
I have zero recollection of this game. I was about to accuse it of not having had a US release. Hopefully there will be a digital release as well, altho if it got a 33% back when, that’s not encouraging 😂
@nocdaes Fate of Atlantis did so many interesting things. Eventually it seemed like technology killed the ability to innovate a little, and simplified everything. Which was good in some respects—fate of Atlantis was complicated and kind of hard compared to later Lucasarts games, but that’s also part of what made it so good! It was a lot more replayable too.
I loved last crusade and fate of Atlantis, and I never did get another to really sit with those. I did of course see the teaser at the end and heard about Brian Moriarty doing the next one, which excited me greatly as a kid. If I’d known it was educational I certainly would have been less excited! 😆
I somehow never heard about iron phoenix, which is for the best. Less disappointment that way. Man I lived for lucasarts adventure games.
@-wc- 100% just speculation on my part, but... lack of profit potential... lack of talent? Too expensive? They made that big deal about rebooting some of their old franchises, and showed some slick-looking (kinda gross) footage. It just made me think of horrible 3D versions of Golden Axe and Streets of Rage. We'll probably get a Crazy Taxi redo out of it or something, I mean who knows! It does not inspire me with confidence.
And then they said they were going to take the Genesis / Mega Drive collection down, right? I have it already on PS and Switch, and I'd kind of like to get it in Xbox as well.
Beside the point--but it made me wonder if it was because of their reboots, or they want to monetize their old games in a different way, or what. Having a single package with so many fantastic games is almost too good to be true anymore, sadly.
Anyway, whatever.
Corn Lord is great though! And if you have even a passing interest in turn-based RPGs, Like a Dragon 7 and 8 are amazing. And I love the Atlus stuff. I played Persona Threemake, SMT V Vengeance, and Metaphor Refantazio all this year. I didn't have time to finish Corn Lord and hope to play it soon! It was up there as well. And still haven't played Like a Dragon 8. They probably won't pump out so much every year, but... this was definitely a Sega/Atlus year for me. I played very little else (besides Octopath Traveler 2 and finishing up Baldur's Gate 3 in January still... and a few shorter games... Natsu-mon!!!).
So even if Sega isn't really... doing anything... they are dominating as a publisher, or at least dominating my life and dominating critical reception.
@-wc- you’re not old! You said you don’t care, so we didn’t elucidate. But the Atlus stuff is: metaphor refantazio (studio zero, which made persona 3-5, smt 3, Catherine); persona 3 reload; unicorn overlord (vanillaware). And ryuu ga gotoku studio has always made the like a dragon (yakuza) stuff under Atlus, since your cutoff of 2005 (December!).
But yes, besides Atlus and RGG, I struggle to think of any sega games. It’s become the day of no longer making games, just outsourcing, or buying other studios to have them do it for you. Nintendo does this a lot. Sony does it. Xbox does it. Tough to even think of many internally developed games. Even many Zeldas and Marios are no longer internally developed.
@poyo_pie now the slacker would live with 5 friends, work 50 hours and still be broke, and would never meet the girlfriend, because she’d already be married with a kid and trying to get a masters degree while also working (and living with parents)
There’s gotta be other games that do this, like how the ps2 and GameCube had progressive scan modes. Surely some games differentiated between the modes and used different references accordingly.
But we may never know. Until someone tries to hack Star Fox adventures into a Mario game.
A lot of pirate kids dressed like that. The table with the pirates is a little more convincing. But I suppose that’s not necessarily that unique either…
There were plenty of “competent” artists who managed to make the mega drive sound bad. Same with the super famicom. It was just bad in different ways. And both could also sound phenomenal.
@axelhander it certainly wasn’t received that way at the time. Response wasn’t extreme. I agree that it’s a great game tho, the best phantasy star, and underrated.
A lot of that may or may not be true, but he said himself carts are expensive. Squaresoft released both chrono trigger and final fantasy 3 (6) at really high prices too. Sega didn’t expect to sell much phantasy star 4, the carts were high capacity and expensive, and they didn’t want to take a bath on it.
The rest, maybe some grains of truth. All love to victor Ireland but…
@MSaturn it’s not so black and white. It does great things and already does bad things too even if no doomsdays happen. Amazing discoveries, like atomic energy, are always both (but hopefully not dramatically bad!)
It’s a deplorable situation for sure, but it isn’t all that often that stuff gets revoked, and usually there’s a fuss when it happens.
Business and capitalism are all about making money; they’re not about doing it in any way that’s necessarily fair. And no matter how much a minority resists, the masses don’t care.
We don’t really own physical games either; we own a license to what’s on the disk, and it may or may not work forever. In addition, disks atrophy, save batteries die.
Nothing lasts forever. Buy what you’re gonna play. Don’t hoard games like toilet paper.

Re: Saturn Was "More Powerful Than PlayStation" Claims Argonaut Founder
@UtopiaNemo there are 2d games on Saturn that the ps1 wouldn't have been able to do. But that’s not the topic of course.

Re: Switch Remake Of Yuji Horii's 'Hokkaido Serial Murder Case' Delisted In The UK
@JackGYarwood yeah that makes sense. Presumably in the Japanese market people have plenty of ways to play the original version.
I hope it doesn’t get delisted in the US too. I want to play it!
Re: Switch Remake Of Yuji Horii's 'Hokkaido Serial Murder Case' Delisted In The UK
😂 so silly and so tame.
Does the remake have English text but a mode to play with the original graphics and sound? Kinda neat.

@Daniel36 yeah, it’s a shame. The art is incredible.

Re: Sega "Pimped Out" On Mallrats Director Kevin Smith Back In 1995
@-wc- Well apparently a new Streets of Rage and a new Shinobi are supposed to be coming out in 2025... I feel more fear than joy about that.

I was thinking of magic knight rayearth. Woops.
I’ve somehow never heard of these, but I’m American. Got nostalgic even tho I’ve never played them! I’d love to try them out.
Re: Sega "Pimped Out" On Mallrats Director Kevin Smith Back In 1995
@-wc- they publish some really good stuff that they have little to do with. 3-5 goty-runners this year (all RPGs!)

@KitsuneNight same same. I get kind of unreasonably excited for fake retro games too.

@Sketcz in contrast to other comments, I know some young folks who still get pretty darn excited. Maybe our brains are just saturated.

Re: Atari Has Acquired Chris Sawyers' Classic PC Sim 'Transport Tycoon'
Atari should do more with microprose stuff. Microprose was awesome back when!
I kind of wish they’d get the xcom license too and make a retro styled xcom. Except with all the bells and whistles of the new firaxis ones.
Re: Jump For Joy! 'RIKI 8Bit Game Collection' Is Getting A Western Switch Release Next Month
I have no idea what any of this is. Why are there as many composers for Astro ninja as for the music games? What are the music games?
Re: PSA: Check Your PSP Battery Right Now
Yeah, mine was ballooned. I’ve never had this happen with any other system, to be fair. Game boy advance sp is older, so you’d think they’d be prone!
NDS and I think 3DS have fairly easily replaceable batteries.
