Re: Review: DreamConn S - Is This $200 Wireless Controller The Ultimate Dreamcast Pad?

@Hexapus

yes exactly! and, the genesis layout matches your index/middle/ring fingers, has a "nub" on the middle button for locating like a qwerty keyboard, and they specifically labelled them "triggers" which may or may not imply anything at all.

also, just my opinion (and i love sega controllers) but six buttons is kinda too many for one thumb, if all the buttons are used and all for different functions. ✌️

I have my two OG DC pads, one packed in, the other supplemental, and they have very different dpads. one is very flat, close to the face of the controller, and the other tall, stands off at least twice as far. no other detectable differences. I never hear anyone talk about this ✌️

btw I had a strong preference for one over the other, but i cant remember which now 😅 time to play some Dreamcast!

PS i also cant remember which controller was the pack-in 😆

i have a couple thoughts 👍

1) "knowing better," in my esteem, is not really a factor when making the flat, unqualified statement "worst ______ ever." (of course the qualifications came later)

2) different hands are different, and some people like the Dreamcast controller. what makes your hands more "correct" than my hands? 🤔 it's an odd argument to make tbh.

3) it's one of the most important controllers ever made, as essentially the long established "pro con" template is a blend of super nintendo (diamond pattern buttons and bumpers) dualshock 1 (two clickable sticks and built in force feedback) and dreamcast (hall effect stick in primary position, analog triggers) features.

PS - I've not claimed that the 5200 is the 'worst controller ever made' but the list of controllers worse than the DC controller is not particularly short. ✌️

@metaphysician

great comment! I completely agree.

"but its like they hate the idea of people buying their old games."

this was never a problem for Namco before Bandai entered the picture, IMO. 😮‍💨

(i remember playing galaxian while ridge racer loaded on psx for example, and then when I saw galaxian/galaga for gameboy a bit later i jumped on it)

FWIW, there was a time that id have jumped on a soulblade/soulcal 1+2, Tekken Trilogy, or Ridge/Rev/Rage comp, but that time has passed and ive grown to enjoy the methods i consequently use to play these games over the years. Sorry guys it's a tiny flame you have to actually try to keep alive! ✌️

@Zendar

thanks for the clarification! and, I really meant it: the game is looking great!

i was addicted to Shattered Pixel Dungeon for months or years in the early 2010s, so this is right up my street and giving me some specific nostalgia. congratulations on what looks like some good, passionate work! I will look forward to playing this game in some form or other ✌️

"The most recent genre title I've heard is for games like Bubble Bobble/Snow Bros. Etc. Arena Platformers."

I have always called those games "single screen platformers" since forever, and I utterly reject "arena platformers," not sure even why but that's what i'm doin. 👍✌️no sir i dont like it.

(single screen games are great, arent they? super sprint? pacman? donkey kong? galaga?these are some of the greatest games ever made. an NES smash bros demake as a single screen game in the style of mario bros might be pretty cool!)

@Bod2019

hey thanks for checking back in! 👍

obv im insanely jealous! 😅 ive been playing it on my steamdeck almost daily, i guess subconciously inspired by our interaction a couple months ago.personally it's the best NES racer I can think of and the list of better SNES racers is very short IMHO!

have you played it before or will this be the first time? EDIT - nvm 😅 have fun! if you enjoyed the first game you will be so pleased with the second! it even has 4p 😲

Re: Modder Builds "World's First" Nintendo 3DS Dock

The_Nintendo_Expat

@h3s

fwiw, the steamdeck can play all the retro games you can imagine, many in an above board way through the various shops including steam and gog, and has the roomiest and most ergonomically competent (at the expense of aesthetics and trendiness imo) control setup ive ever used, especially in a handheld device.

i dont know what your challenges are, full stop. personally, im a finish carpenter with tired and aching hands at the end of the day, and nothing feels more inviting to hold and use than my steamdeck. ✌️ again, fwiw.

MEMORY UNLOCKED

when I was like 8 or 10 (so early-mid 90s) I used to get my grandmother to buy me PC games from the discount bin at Sam's, and one of the games featured Aerosmith and came with a "guitar pick" controller, which you would shake or tap on the desk to "strum" in game or something.

i didnt buy it but i was intrigued. i mostly bought adventure and pinball games because I was pretty, pretty cool. 😎 thanks for listening to my amazing story ✌️

Re: 'Trigger Happy' Is A Sumptious Visual Tour Of Gaming's Greatest Controllers

The_Nintendo_Expat

thanks for the write up on what appears to be my kind of book 🙂👍

small note: the sub headline "(...and a few that are perhaps best forgotten)" might come off a bit critical of the book in a way that i don't believe is intentional. my logic is that by their inclusion, the books authors intend to "remember" the controllers as it were, despite the flaws or what have you.

or in other words it's in conflict with this bit, "some of which were arguably little more than design dead-ends (who remembers the Batman joystick?) but remain interesting artefacts nonetheless."

my 2 cents, thanks again ✌️

Re: The Wait Could Finally Be Over For Analogue's Much-Delayed FPGA N64

The_Nintendo_Expat

im sure this'll be a good'n, but I still think id rather just (and do) have an N64, which I'm assuming are still commonly available for less money.

i do enjoy the 8bd n64 controller personally very much but it's so oddball that it's hard to find perfect applications, even with some common n64 games. i thought itd be a great DC and saturn 3d pad stand in but without analog triggers its hit and miss.
