ive always wanted to love the NGCD pad, but its never felt quite "right" to me, so i havent bothered to check out the 8bd version, though im always low key tempted.

tbh I think the NGP stick is an improvement over the original, and my dream controller would essentially be a dualshock 3 with NGP stick in place of dpad. 😊

we have different ways of thinking about it! ✌️ I don't think there are necessarily wrong answers, and I'm so happy that other people even want to think about this kind of stuff 😅

fwiw, I've thought since release it was obvious that numerous specific features unique to the Dreamcast were imitated in the Xbox's design, and too many to chalk up to coincidence or zeitgeist. just my opinion!

tbh the Sidewinder angle does introduce a wrinkle to the story I hadn't really considered. 👍 thanks for chatting with me about one of my favorite topics 😊

so, the XBOX controller can't be a ripoff of the Dreamcast controller, because the Sidewinder was a ripoff of the Saturn controller. interesting logic, I'm not sure I follow. 🤔

"And with the weird rotation of the buttons, the bottom row was more likely X, A - not A, B."

there is no "bottom row" of buttons for the Dreamcast controller as you've defined it, but I am not sure how this supports your argument anyway. ✌️

"Much simpler answer: Microsoft is a western company - labeling from left (A) to right (B} seems natural."

I see what you are saying, but I disagree that it's a simpler answer than "they were copying Dreamcast" which to my mind they clearly were! why go looking for another reason beyond that? ✌️

2 VMU slots, analog triggers, button/stick placement. they looked at what Sega did and copied, because they aren't a videogame company, and they had never successfully made an original controller design that "caught on." they still haven't, as every Xbox controller has essentially been an iteration of the same design.

(btw Sony copied the SNES controller pretty much whole stock, but at least they had the self respect to relabel the buttons 😂✌️)

on top of that, SEGA did it first, and they are a Japanese company, so the explanation that Microsoft did the same because they are a western company actually doesn't make a ton of sense. 👍 imo.

(EDIT - to be fair, they also stole dual analog sticks and pressure sensitive buttons from PlayStation 😆)

"Dude what? Please explain."

sure.

I found your comment to be kind of hateful towards a person you don't know, for no reason. I don't really get where your animosity comes from, except that maybe you wish you could make stuff like this but for some reason you can't, or more likely just believe that you can't.👍

also I listened, there's some pretty good stuff in there! 😊✌️

not a huge deal anyway, good luck with all your endeavors!

"how much of it is EGM itself, versus gaming in general, versus being a kid in the late '90s?"

suffice to say, if you were middle aged in the 90s, with no interest in videogames, then you probably wouldn't have gotten as much out of EGM as we did 😂✌️

off the top of my head, I particularly miss the sushi X files, and decapitato, and the GoldenEye hype train, and the metal gear solid hype train, and TOoT hype train, and their protracted comedic usage of Gameboy Camera long after the hype for that peripheral had died.

I also really enjoyed reading the bios for the "review crew" members, which they updated every single month and were often entertaining with recurring gags and themes, and sort of in-jokes.

OMG I'm so pleased that Game Sack is getting some exposure on here! If some of y'all haven't checked it out... check it out!

Also EGM was my #1 magazine during the PSX era. SUCH. a great time, the whimsy and genuine excitement about the games were both palpable while reading. I miss being 12 years old, poring over every page, even the ads. ♥️ I absolutely can't wait for this! but I will!

see also Gameplayers, my favorite mag of the SNES era. ✌️ I could say everything I've said about EGM towards GP instead, still true.
