Re: A Year On From The AYANEO 3, I Wish More Companies Were Copying Its Best Feature

h3s

I have nearly all the 8bitdo controllers (Xbox and Bluetooth). A few genuine series X controllers an Xbox elite 2 core a switch pro controller 2 the luna controller and the Switch real arcade pro Hori stick. I only play on TV 99% of the time I think the only one that can easily change parts (the elite 2 core) is the least well made because of it. And the part that is starting to wear out is the face buttons (I have only had it 3 months).

I think overall just a decent ifixit repair score and available parts is good enough for me.

(I need a better quality myoo mini dpad already after hardly any usage but the postage costs are astronomical for the only real upgrade I have found.)

Re: Everyone's Favourite PSP Emulator Just Got Even Better

h3s

@metaphysician For sure the original Rondo of Blood and Symphony of the Night do but the remake Rondo of Blood I assumed was a proper native remake. (A limited amount of research seemed to confirm this.) I have issues with the sound and video becoming unsynced or cutting out both in game and cutscenes. (Or did perhaps I should try it again it was very early I bought PSPSPP Gold compared to when it first arrived.) It was happening frequently enough that I got annoyed with it. (I think I ended up playing the extracted PC Engine version in RetroArch instead. I know that is known for sound issues even on a real PSP). Dunno how popular it is.

Re: Talking Point: "Why Bother If You're Not Going To Do It Properly?" - Why SEGAGAGA's AI Translation Is Upsetting So Many People

h3s

If it works and is complete it’s certainly better than what existed before. The transition itself and the work getting it into the game are two quite different things. (I am much less bothered about stuff like this than stuff of dubious legality being locked behind Patreon (If it’s something someone has full rights to I have no issues with whatever)).

Re: "Literally Crying Right Now" - 50 Copies Of This Adult-Only Visual Novel Demo Exist, And One Just Got Destroyed In Transit

h3s

@pocketmoon I think that isn’t true I don’t know the specifics (As I am not into it.) but in the UK some forms of hentai are very illegal. (If I was into it I would be extremely careful because of what the crimes fall under.) Personally I would allow anything that on balance caused less harm than not existing but the British like authoritarian laws unfortunately.

Re: Evercade Range Expands With Two New Carts And A Banjo-Kazooie-Packing Super Pocket

h3s

I have the Neo Geo super pocket and the 3 Neo Geo Carts but it’s too small for me. I would go for the proper Evercade I could get the same roms as the pocket on it. I guess there will be an update with Analog Sticks based on the new pad. I don’t want to get one bundled with games I don’t want though. If the Capcom one was still available I would probably go for that.

Re: They Buried My Beloved CeX

h3s

The Cex near me is the only store selling games. (Used to be Gamestation (After it was acquired by game and it wasn’t really that good anymore.) / Grainger Games / Blockbuster (Which was actually pretty good I managed to get all the DS Dragon Quests from there 4 and 5 were used.) I sometimes get games from Argos (Trying to avoid Amazon because it is flooded with garbage when I look for tech stuff and it is annoying me. They make it too difficult to find sold by Amazon.co.uk. I have been sold imports from random 3rd party sellers too many times.)

I think Cex is now a franchise that is run much differently to what it used to be. The original Gamestation was like what Cex used to be. (The SNES RPG’s like ff3 / Chrono Trigger were like £30 used when to import them it was more like at least £70) I have never found any weird and wonderful stuff in my local Cex. You can’t even order online and pick up at the local shop which is something I probably would do.

Re: They Buried My Beloved CeX

h3s

The CeX near me won’t touch imports at all for the most part. (It once had some jpg virtual boy stuff however.). I think the way they currently operate is like a parasite I think their existence causes real harm and they share quite a big responsibility for the increased price of e.g Nintendo games. (I shudder to think how much money has been leeched by them from developers and publishers.)

Re: Another Set Of Sega Classics Are Being Discontinued On Mobile

h3s

I bet they stop working under a future iOS update. I am quite happy with the Netflix version of Mania for Sonic on iPad (Or the 3d one on Apple Arcade). But after what happened with Hades I don’t trust Netflix Games at all. (I think it was a brilliant version much better than the Switch one. It was really annoying starting again on Xbox.)

Re: Sega Saturn's SAROO Flash Cart Just Got An Important Bug Fix

h3s

For these if buying from Ali Express apparently the max ones are the ones with a proper injection molded shell. (I would still wait until they specifically state 0.9 compatibility though with open hardware you never know how closely the specs have been followed. With the clones of other stuff like ode’s it’s very difficult to tell .)

Re: "A Woefully Underrated N64 Underdog" - Treasure's Bangai-O Gets Not One But Two New English Translations

h3s

@metaphysician I I don’t mind games having a story but I really don’t like the story being just a load of boring cutscenes. (There again if there is a bad story I think that is much worse than no story at all. I can’t get on with modern jrpgs I was only interested in the stories but the old ones used to engage me like reading a book but I just don’t seem to get into them properly in the modern format. )
If the game mechanics are not that good. (But the story is great but all cutscene I would rather it be a film / tvshow or anime.)

Re: Not Feeling Castlevania: Belmont's Curse's Art Style? Then Check Out Silent Planet

h3s

It’s very hard to get a game in this genre I like. (I don’t like excessive backtracking. Repetition, Having to use the map all the time (Due to everywhere looking almost identical.) I think I just don’t care for what other people must want.

The most important thing is that it plays like a good action platformer. (I think infernax is probably my favourite recent one it’s not perfect like SoTN or Super Metroid but it isn’t boring and samey.)

It’s not really a Metroidvania but at least something like the messenger you actually have to use the upgrades. (In lots of Metroidvanias you don’t really need to master the new techniques that you get or even need them more than a handful of times.)

Re: "One Of The Best-Run Arcades I've Ever Seen" - Take A Look Inside Prince Arcades

h3s

I like the idea of everything being in tip top shape. (I don’t get why Arcade Club is so bothered about what the cabs look like more than how they play).

They could easily replace the joysticks on e.g the Astro City cabs and in doing so the games would play much better. (Even if the boards were just in Generic Cabs that wouldn’t bother me. Arcade Club is the first time I have come across a Neo Geo cab with the red MVS artwork.) Some of the shmups are really difficult to play with a duff joystick.

Re: Achievement Unlocked - This Free Service Has Changed The Way I Play Retro Games In 2026

h3s

I don’t really like achievements I usually do them in Super Giant games because I tend to like them enough to want to keep playing at harder settings (Can’t understand why there is no achievement for doing the last Skelly statue (Heat 32) in Hades though.) I don’t like collectibles at all and that seems all too common. (Much rather have to complete a speedrun like Super Meat Boy as an alternative.) I have all the achievements for All Stars Racing Transformed as well. (There was only the time trials left and if I am going to play something online I might as well learn the tracks properly. I don’t think many people did the burning rangers one judging by how much better I did on that track online.)
For Neo Geo Games I go for 5 credit clear and then one credit clear. (I would probably prefer to start with AES mode but recently I have been just using MVS mode because it’s the default on ACA Neo Geo)

I don’t think most of the achievements should exist at all as they are anything but.

Re: 8BitMods Launches Web-Based UI For Its Range Of Next-Gen Memory Cards

h3s

I don’t think I will be going for any retro hardware without open source software. (Open Hardware matters less to me). I am willing to accept accept a higher initial cost or less initial features in exchange for the possibility of improvements later. (I have had good experience so far.) From what I have seen any DRM the closers can break anyway )

Re: "All Smoke And Mirrors" - Square Localisation Veteran Thinks History Is Repeating Itself With AI

h3s

The article makes it sound as if fuzzy logic is not actually useful for anything anymore. A washing machine being able to estimate roughly how full it is and adjust the cycle accordingly is pretty useful. (If I had a combination washer/ dryer I would want it to refuse to start drying if it is too full- which is normally at 50% of the load for washing.) I don’t know why he would rather have a washer that operates identically with a tiny quantity of stuff compared to a full load.

Re: A Native PC Port Of Panzer Dragoon Saga Is In Early Development

h3s

@MarkyVigoroth The situation with that is significantly different to this in that you can buy it for £9 on current Xboxes. They have done a really good job with the upscaling on series x but if you just want to play it then an Xbox one is really dirt cheap. I am not sure a PC re compilation will ever be as good as it is on series X going by the other games I have tried that have gone that route. (This might be better than current Saturn emulation).

Re: "Yes, It Was Elitist, And No, That Wasn't A Bad Thing" - EDGE Alumni On Why The Mag Is Still Going Strong, Over 30 Years On

h3s

If a person or group of people puts any amount of effort into showing how elite they are then they are usually not anything of the sort.

The people who really are elite don’t try to show it (And sometimes actively try to hide it.)

Maybe it’s a good way to make money though appealing to some people like that. (As long as they don’t actually believe it.)

Re: "Annihilate All Enemies!" - Namco's Block-Breaking Arkanoid Rival 'Quester' Arrives On Consoles This Week

h3s

Did this use a paddle in the Arcades ?

I think Hamster should collaborate with someone on a range of suitable controllers for some of these games. (Getting a £300 wheel for ridge racer is not worth it to me. Sucks there is not first party wheels anymore. I had the DC and 360 first party ones but they were at the upper end of what I would pay. I would pay quite a bit for an aes joystick because it looks like it doesn’t need a table but I might be wrong on that.)

Re: "The Fine Arts Were Always A Massive Grift" - Controversial Earthworm Jim Creator Goes All-In On Generative AI

h3s

The art quality of a game doesn’t really bother me. (I appreciate really good pixel art like Metal Slug but I have yet to find an indie game up to that level.) If the mechanics are interesting then I like it. I think that overall before long I will get a load of stuff that I wouldn’t otherwise have got.

The big difference between what has happened to the working class forever and this is that it affects the middle classes (Who I have zero sympathy for despite being part of them.)

It will probably affect my source of income but I don’t mind that much. There will always be something interesting to do.

Re: Talking Point: What Are Your Favourite Fable Memories?

h3s

@shgamer I never really liked fable but previously to that he either made new genres or significantly raised the bar in them. Populous (Especially) / Magic Carpet and Black or White stand out much more more to me probably Theme Park as well. (Dungeon Keeper ?). Those are the reason he became hot property (I think fable was not good and how he got his more recent reputation for over promising and under delivering.)
