Master System has 8KB of RAM and 16KB of VRAM which is largely superior to the NES' 2KB of work RAM and 2KB of VRAM, and it also the Zilog Z80 processor runs at 3.58mhz whilst the NES's Ricohs 2A03 and 2A07 run at 1.79 and 1.66mhz
On NES, those expansion chips in the NES carts, was doing that extra work, not the native NES hardware itself.
@Kev711
Yes PC Engine games, look 16-bit.
It has a 8 bit processor with a 16 bit graphics chip.
If a game looks close to something you find on SNES and Mega Drive, then it almost looks like a 16 bit game = many Master System games, compared to what you see on the NES.
Glad they choose Master System, instead of the NES, due to the more powerful hardware and colors. Many Master System games, almost looks like 16bit in comparison.
Looks like a reskin of Deathsmiles, which in itself was inspired by Cotton.
I used to love Cave styled bullet hell games, but now I just find them annoying, especially with screechy anime voices.
Sad that most modern shmups are made this way.
If it will get exclusive games, and also can be docked to a tv, then sure. But if it's just yet another device, playing modern "retro" games, that are available everywhere, then I'm not interested.
Also:
"If all developers are focusing on these huge cinematic experiences, and they're aiming at teenagers and [people in their] early 20s, that kind of age group, then I think they are missing a trick."
How out of touch are they? Plenty of us older gamers enjoy also those modern games, and there are a HUGE number of games, that are more than cinematic, and made for all age groups. Even some elderly people in their 70s-80s have started to play modern video games.
I'm playing the Adventures of Elliot demo, and it feels like playing a recently discovered old SNES/PS1 game, when it comes to the experience. Getting the same feeling, as when I played Zelda 3, in my teens.
There are a "million" ways to play retro games today, from any old system. Retrogamers who grew up in the 70:s-90:s, either still have their favorite systems, or have moved on to emulation or fpga. Evercade was a fun novelty, the first year or two, but mediocre built quality, and cartridges that can die at any moment, and now focusing on newer stuff, killed the fun. I'm so burned out on this nostalgia wave anyway, as the market have become oversaturated with it now.
Just get a chinese handheld, and play everything, up to the 32bit era. It blows the Evercade away, no matter if it's emulation or fpga. Or I bet everone, have a device at home, capable of emulation, these days.
I got zero problems, downloading roms, as the original programmers/developers, wont see any of the money, from Evercade sales.
Though I gladly support new indie games, for old consoles, if I can buy the rom, directly from the developer, instead of going through a company like Evercade.
Wonder how this retro wave will survive, when our generation is gone. Sure some younger gamers also enjoy retro, but I bet it's mostly from the N64-PS3 era now.
Loved those old arcade styled games, we got on our cellphones, back in the early 2000:s. Back when mobile games wasn't pay to win crap, and an endless sea of shovelware. I miss my old Nokia π
950 euros now, for the 1tb model, for a 4 year old, already outdated handheld, than can barely run newer AAA games, at the lowers setting and resolutions. You can get a PS5 Pro for less than that.
I'm glad I upgraded my PC, two years ago, before this madness started...
Was looking forward to buy the Steam VR headset, but it will probably be stupid expensive now.
And I don't dare to guess what the Steam Machine will cost. It was supposed to be a budget way, to bring PC gaming to the living room. But since it's supposed to be 6x the power of a Steam Deck, that entry point will become unaffordable, defeating the purpose of the damn thing.
If this AI crisis, keeps on going for many years to come, then my latest upgrade to my gaming PC, might be the last.
So they made it insanely difficult now? I'll stick with the OG version. The game had some incredible visuals at the time, especially for a handheld, with scaling FX etc. It even looks good on a bigger screen. To me it has always been a classic.
Kinda hilarious to think, that if the US coverart, for Mega Man 1 and 2 (not as bad, but still wrong look of Mega Man, including the EU artwork), was released today, everyone (including me) would think it was AI slop. π
Amongst all the bad things going on in the world, this is kind of a first world problem.
Yes I have been part of forums, that suddenly shut down after 20 years. Sad, but nothing in life lasts forever. And to him, that money was better saved for something more important.
@Protion9 Good choice, I have a Mega CD 1, but I have tried to fix it many times now, without success, so I give up. Was also thinking about upgrading to a Pro, just for CD support, but might pick up a Superstation in the future. Unless I get a Mega CD 2 instead.
When it comes to the fan, I bet their are plenty of alternatives, that will fit inside the case.
Odd that the fan is not included, especially when running N64 games. FPGA + summer heatwave will probably end badly, when you're in the middle of an intense boss battle, and the unit shutsdown due to overheating.
Add a fan to your purchase.
There we're so many covers, both on magazines and video game covers (Remember Barbarian?), back in the 80:s-90:s, that would give the modern audience a complete meltdown. I can tell a lot of people online, who was too young to remember, or wasn't born yet.

What's the point, when you can play the original with an emulator, since you still have to use a rom?

Or I could just stick with the real Wonderboy games. I would rather see games INSPIRED by the classic, bringing their own take on the genre, instead of clones.
I recommend trying them out on emulators or flashcards, before you throw money at them. For me, they definitely are of the "rent for one weekend, play for a few hours, return the cartridge, regretting wasting money on it" category.
I owned a Playdate, for about two weeks, until I sold it. Fun gimmick at first, but the tiny screen and mostly generic games (fun for 10 minutes), killed it for me. Definitely quantity over quality. MUCH better indie games on any other platform.
Pre-ordered. Should we stop buying everything SNK game now? How about the SNK licensed Everdrive carts and handhelds? The collections on Switch? Etc. This is so cool. Always wanted to try this piece of Nintendo history. It's sad that Nintendo themselves don't seem to care about any of their pre-DK/Mario stuff. Would have loved to see the footage being used, in a recreation of the game, for the Switch 2, using the joycons as the guns.
Would love to see the Rebirth series, ported to modern systems.

The internet have become flooded with Ai slop.

I just wish that this kind of Ai would just die already.
