I gotta admit, as a skeptic towards the idea, that is pretty impressive. Seems like the only downside is that the thing is running windows.

@MontyMole yeah, people like to think Return was saying "you should stop caring about fiction you loser" which deliberately ignores the ACTUAL point the game was making. Ron was being a lot more charitable with the game and it's ending then people like to believe.

@slider1983 There was no real constructive criticism on that blog page - it was mostly just attacks and vitriolic complaints. If you can't understand why going to someone's face to tell them the thing they believe in sucks and that they're a terrible person is a problem, then maybe you should rethink a few things.

There's no way you would "criticize" someone like this:

Either way, the responses to the art direction were totally out of proportion. You'd think people would learn after Streets of Rage 4 and Wind Waker and Crash 4 and even Curse of Monkey Island, but apparently not.

@slider1983 it was mostly harassment disguised as "valid criticism," to the point where Ron Gilbert had to shut down comments on his personal blog because so many people were flooding them with impotent rage-fueled threats and attacks.

@slider1983 if you don't like it, that's all well and good - people have their preferences(I for one don't care for Curse's style after all), but Return's visuals are certainly not bad enough to justify harassing the people who made it for having the gall to not make it look like the one game people won't shut up about.

@MontyMole That's also true, but I feel the detraction has lessened a lot in recent years. I've seen more people praise Curse as one of the best in the genre, as many players' introduction to Monkey Island, and as the best Monkey Island game. If anything, a lotta vitriol I've seen has mostly been aimed at Return as of late. A shame, too - I think that one is also great.

Bubbalah, please. Curse is pretty much the "Thousand-Year Door" of Monkey Island - the game in the series almost everyone loves and no one shuts up about loving(for better and for worse).

Really amazing how much effort people are putting in to preserving these games in the long-term - certainly more than most official studios. I can only imagine the possibilities and all of them involve Viva Piñata.

@smoreon maybe I just have a terrible computer. Wouldn't be surprised, though.

@smoreon I know Generations has a PC port, but it has some immense slowdown issues and they add up. They can be fixed with a mod, but I feel having to mod a 2011 PC game for it to run isn't exactly ideal. And yes, I'm aware that the ShadGens port runs better but I'm not keen on the changes in that version. I know. Nitpicky.

As for the Series X version, it still has some hiccups here and there. Nothing too bad but it sometimes has trouble with keeping a consistent frame rate - like in Adabat as you mentioned.

@X68000 no, but you can turn off the battle theme that plays.

Looking at the footage, this is very impressive. Seeing technology finally catch up to Sonic Unleashed is truly wild. Not even the Series X could run this thing smoothly.

Best thing is that this probably won't run into any legal trouble given that SEGA is kinda ashamed of this title.

Looking forward to when someone recompiles Generations.

I played the first Dino Crisis last year for the first time and really enjoyed it. A big jank but a nice little survival horror with a bunch of dinos.

I'm still surprised at this being a film. A TV show I feel would suit them better.

@axelhander everything you've said here gives off the impression that you've never truly created anything before to understand why artists would be frustrated over this. You should try it sometime - put effort into making something, without the use of machine learning.

Wish they'd do an updated version of the 3D Control Pad instead.

Man, I just got into Mega64 this year and they've been a riot. Makes it hard to hear that they might have to deal with closure. Just when I was just starting to get to know them...

@RetroGames Mrs. Tallirico, is that you? I know you're proud of your son, but you can't defend him every time people call him out. He needs to be able to stand up for himself in situations like this.

@slider1983 The point is that there is no "point", it's very niche and Panic is very aware of that. As is, the 'date just exists to be a weird little handheld with a weird little crank and weirder little games and for some people(like me) that can be enough.

I want 50 of them. One for each game.

@NeonPizza I actually liked what they had going with the Super Nt, which at least had the decency of offering color schemes reminiscent of the system's inspiration, and a transparent one to boot. Not really sure what happened that caused them to change course after that.

@nocdaes I suppose that makes sense, but I do wish there was still some extra color on these.

Kinda wish there was more color to it. The all black/white finish makes it feel sterile, and for a console design like the N64 I feel like that's the last thing you want from it.

I'm not as excited as I'd like to be - chalk it up to Analogue's inability to keep their products in good supply - but this is still pretty neat. Hope they can get to the Dreamcast at some point.

Finally, Zelda is good again

I wish more official remakes were like this, honestly. Improving a flawed game with misused potential is automatically going to get my attention than a remake of a successful game that still holds up.
