This $75 Nintendo DS-Focused Emulation Handheld Is Set To Launch Next Month

Surely, this will be even better as a Tate arcade device. There's nothing else like this.

Damian, is this the best budget gameboy clone available?

Emulation devices are not for me, so I’m probably missing the point. But why would you get one of these for DS games when you could get a second hand DS Lite and R4 card for a similar, if not cheaper price? The screens on the DS Lite are great.

@GravyThief Not to mention that 3DS, the best Nintendo handheld in my opinion, is backward compatible with DS and those cards.

I can't believe I can play Virtual Boy games at full speed on New 3DS in stereoscopic 3D. That system didn't even exist in this part of the world and now I kind of have it in my pocket.

A tate mode handheld would be an instant buy. Inferested how this reviews. Ds is bonus

@GravyThief Well there's the two dozen other game systems it will play, as listed on the bottom of the article. This will be perfect for vertical screen games for the Lynx, WonderSwan, and arcade. Plus the size is way more portable than a typical DS unit.

Another pointless attempt to copy a device that's already available cheaply and does the job perfectly.

Just hack an original machine guys.

@ruiner9 Yes, you are right about other devices being more versatile. It's a good thing that all these things are available as a way of preserving and playing old games.

@ruiner9 I did think of that, of course. But wouldn’t you want to get a different, more normal looking system for other game systems? This just seems very DS specific, which is why I made the comparison.

@GravyThief The “abnormal” part, the vertical screen, is the selling point of the unit, so no.

Kind of like the 2DS but without the casing creating a divide

I mean the Ayaneo Flip Ds exist too. Surely that would be a better option for you. I, for one, approve of this device. Besides DS, DS Lites, & DSi's ain't gonna last. Plus, this one is pretty affordable too. If it would play DS carts then I'd buy it too. But I have a 2DS that's pretty new & that will handle all my DS/3DS gaming needs for at least a decade or so.

Pretty pointless, if you ask me. Why not just buy a second-hand DS? I did so a couple of months ago and it only cost me £40. I was then able to jailbreak the system and copy a massive library of DS games (in addition to other systems) onto an SD card.

Definitely should be marketing that as a tate handheld. DS is already perfectly cornered with a jailbroken DS/3DS which are still incredibly plentiful.

Would be awesome to play some TATE arcade titles as well as DS, 3DS, Wii U, and N-Gage games. Can you imagine playing games like Xenoblade Chronicles X on the go the way it was meant to be, I don't think anyone has ever done that yet.

I don't know if this really is well suited to DS, but sticking with the original consoles comes with plenty of concessions. The screens are not that good. Many people don't like the DS controls(I like them). And you won't get a lot of useful modern conveniences(I like those too).

Wait, I thought Drastic was pulled from the Google play store and now it doesn't exist on Android?

Not to be "that guy," I'm into some of these devices and I like my Miyoo Mini Plus, but much like the PSP, if you want to play DS games, just get a DS and a flashcart.

Yeah I just don't get the whole thing about emulation, the best way to play games is on original hardware, now I might upgrade the screens on the original hardware or do some other mods, but it's still original hardware. I just don't feel like sending Chinese companies money so I can play games that I can already play perfectly well.

@GravyThief Exactly. DS emulation is not perfect so I don’t see the need for a device like this. It’s just ewaste.

It might be decent for emulating old computers - virtual keyboard on the bottom screen and gameplay on the top. Normally, emulating a C64 or Speccy on the go is a pain if you need a keyboard to be available while playing, and this could be a nice way around that problem.
And yeah, taté arcades too.

@RupeeClock 100%, I got a DSi XL recently and playing it side-by-side with a 3DS it's insane how much better DS games look on the DSi because of that scalar multiple resolution difference.

I think it's the main reason I thought Pokemon Black/White looked like a downgrade from Gen 4 when I played in 2011, cuz I exclusively played B/W on a 3DS but was too young to realise why it was so much blurrier.

@avcrypt everyone’s talking about TATE mode for this (I’m presuming Shmups?), but wouldn’t there be a big gap between the two screens?

Would'nt this screen actually be quite tall for tate mode? I might guess that a 1:1 device like the rgb30 would be just as good or better for tate mode, and also great for a whole lot else (besides DS of course 😅)

@-wc- I was seeing the picture at the top where it looks like two screens. I’ve just noticed picture (CGI mock-up?) further down… still looks weird 🤣

yeah... i think a "wonderswan" style design would look and work better, and be more versatile ✌️ this one looks kinda odd to me too.

@GravyThief Every every DS Lite I have bought has had dead pixels. Personally I'm just tired of the gamble.

@Seacliff try buying a japanese one if thats the case. My dsi xl i bought off of gamestop which was owned by one of tbe employees so i was able to get a good one. But arent people modding some of them online with new screens?

@DanijoEX-the-Pierrot thats true but as gameboys still run well i dont think thats anytime soon. Do any of these clone dvices have the touch feature implemented well? Its a huge staple to some of those games working

@GravyThief Definitely not missing the point. Not only does this seem like a PITA to handle for people with bigger hands, the screen resolution doesn't appear to do better than a second hand DS Lite with upgraded screens and R4 card. Like you mentioned, price wise, can probably do better than $75.

The horizontal black band with the Nintendo logo to simulate the folded screen is hilarious.

No thanks. My hands are cramping just looking at it, and the screen is obviously inadequate for proper scaling.

What is this flash chart everyone keeps bringing up? Sounds intriguing. That being said this looks like a great device for a child but as someone that already has a 3DS I don't really see a need for me to get it. But if a kid growing up doesn't have one this seems like a great birthday gift I wish my nephew was older I would certainly get him one.
