Re: FPGA Vs Software Emulation - Which Is Best? We Asked Four Experts To Find Out

MARl0

If you have the money to spend on it, FPGA is absolutely the way to go for systems that are supported by it. If I want to play SNES games, my MiSTer or Analogue Pocket are always going to be my go–to devices for it. I will never play those games on Nintendo Switch Online for example.

But for later consoles like the Gamecube and PS2, software emulation is not only the way to go, but really the only option outside of original hardware! That said, it's not perfect either. I was trying to play Ace Combat 4 for example last year on software emulation, and while the game was playable, it had severe issues. But then you have stuff like F-Zero GX on the Gamecube that played perfectly on software emulation! It really all depends on the game.

Re: PaRappa The Rapper-Esque Saturn Game 'Jung Rhythm' Gets English Fan Translation

I tried this out yesterday, and while it is very cool to see a translation for this game, I have to admit that in practice, much of it feels pointless. I can't read the translated subtitles when I need to focus on the notes at the bottom of the screen. The only real way to translate a game like this is to provide translated voice acting/music as well. It reminds me of the story mode DLC in Sol Cresta. It's entirely voiced in japanese, so you can't even read the subtitles when you're focused on actually playing a shmup.

Re: All Is Not Well In The World Of FPGA Retro Gaming

All I'll say is that I love all FPGA platforms, and that I love the work everyone is doing on them to preserve classic games and hardware. Love it!

I also just worked directly with srg320 to get Shining Force III working properly on the MiSTer Saturn core, and he was an absolute pleasure to work with. Amazing job by him and everyone else in the community who help make these platforms what they are.

Re: Irem's R-Type Is Coming To Analogue Pocket

MARl0

I wonder if the core will use the Pocket's variable refresh display to run the games at 55hz, which is what M72 games run at. My MiSTer runs them at 55hz on my LG C3 OLED, so it would be cool to have that on my Pocket as well!

Re: EmuDeck 2.2 Is Live, Offers Sega Model 2 And 3 Arcade Support

MARl0

@BionicDodo I got it working yesterday. For Model 2, you need to put the roms into the second "roms" folder that is inside the Model 2 folder. As far as I'm aware, that is the only emulator in emudeck that does that.

Also, if you want to change dip switches for Model 3, press "6" on the virtual keyboard. For Model 2, press "F2".

Re: Poll: Is Metroid Prime The Best 2D To 3D Transition Of Any Game Series, Ever?

MARl0

I would say yes. It takes Metroid into 3D better than Mario and Zelda's attempts in my opinion. While I love the 3D Mario games, I also can't deny that taking a platforming game into 3D makes for a much less precise experience. There are countless times when judging depth and distance causes problems in 3D platformers, which just doesn't happen in Metroid Prime. Zelda did a better job than Mario, but I still think Prime is a significantly better game than the 3D Zelda games.
