Re: Lunar Remastered Won't (Currently) Include The Original English Voice Acting, But It's Been Offered "For Cheap"

The_Nintend_Pedant

"It's a shame, because Ireland says he has a lot of stuff he could offer for these projects, including uncensored outtakes, audience tapes and other cool extras. "

geez, maybe this Ireland guy should just start publishing games himself! ๐Ÿ˜ฌ

EDIT - the headline seems to imply that the game will include non original/new English voice acting, but it will actually have no English voice acting.

"Sure, someone is always going to be stuck with the joypad rather than the authentic coin-op interface, but it's not the end of the world."

1) or they can use a stick of they so choose, right?

2) especially given #1 above, far worse is that player 2 will always be peerng over the shoulder of player 1, kind of like trying to see what someone is doing on their ipad. ๐Ÿ™‚โ€โ†”๏ธ๐Ÿ™‚โ€โ†”๏ธ

3) two sets of controls is the ONLY way for street fighter, this is DOA for me personally for this reason.

"None of Mega Man's famous platforming adventures are included, which might seem a bit odd"

what seems odd is the choice of Mega Man for this project at all, given that the "famous platforming adventures" mentioned are not arcade games. ๐Ÿค”

thanks for the review! my take is that this seems high quality, but the lack of AV out, second controls, and odd choices for the marquee franchises make it irrelevant for me right off sadly.

The_Nintend_Pedant

"Because it's a 4:3 screen, it's the perfect aspect ratio for retro gaming, but you'll still find that some titles have a border around the action (like TATE-mode shmups, for example)."

Imo the second half of this couplet actually disproves the first, by demonstrating that a 1:1 screen is actually the perfect ratio for retro gaming, when it comes to arcade games in particular (also handheld games made for a variety of different screens.) โœŒ๏ธ

"there's no way to connect the Alpha to your television via HDMI (...) feels like an optional feature that most people would have welcomed."

I'll go a step further and say that such a feature would/could have legitimized this entire endeavor, in terms of justifying the purchase. as is, it feels like an executive toy mostly for display/nostalgia purposes. โœŒ๏ธ

@N64-ROX

"I get the feeling that a lot of "physical forever" purists are going to get a rude awakening when they plug in their Switch cartridges in 20 years' time and most of them run like muck without any patches..."

I think about this all the time!! physical makes zero sense to me now, and I rarely buy games that way because of exactly what you describe. we are on the installment plan, now, and it's hard to imagine what "retro" gaming will be like when it relies on all this online garbage that no longer functions.

for me, pre-internet gaming is a different thing, and essentially dead, along with so many other good aspects of life. it does seem like theres a movement to "unplug" but since it isnt the "way forward $" for the dominant corpses i mean corporations I don't think we will move that direction with any level of peace or comfort.

so, I'll just hang on to the pre-switch consoles and games that I still have, leave my phone by the door (on better days) and roll with the punches ๐Ÿ˜ŠโœŒ๏ธ cheers.

Re: The PC-88 RPG 'Xak II' Is Coming To Switch, But Without English Text Options

The_Nintend_Pedant

I will say this: while the Wii is definitely part of the "old Nintendo" that I love, part of the appeal for me before Wii (yes, I'm old and I had every Nintendo console along the way since NES) was that Nintendo was averse/afraid of online gaming or distribution just like me, and in those days there never, ever would have been a non localized game allowed on any Nintendo platform.

in other words, I meant what I said, but when I said it, I didnt realize just how far back I was reaching. ๐Ÿ˜…๐Ÿ‘ so It's pretty much old man yells at Nintendo shaped cloud.

Re: "The Project Is A Complete Scam" - The Internet Isn't Convinced By The SuperSega FPGA Console

The_Nintend_Pedant

@bluphraust

lol very true! or (in the US at least) "middle class voters." It's no one! It's everyone! ๐Ÿ˜†

"The Internet" in journalism bugs me in particular because it's just like when (ahem) certain politicians and news organizations say "people are saying." The implication is that everyone or most people agree but in fact there's no "there" there, and it's actually just the speaker using a kind of straw man fallacy to separate themselves from the statement they personally would like to propagate, in order to make it seem more valid.

in truth, there are people on "the internet" on both/all sides of literally any issue, and this same writer could make the opposite argument or any argument at all really using the same strategy and data pool ("the internet.")

Re: Anniversary: GTA: San Andreas, The PS2's Best-Selling Game, Turns 20 Today

The_Nintend_Pedant

this game was a phenomenal "late gen" release at the time. to have our heads expanded by gta3 and then to see another giant leap to San Andreas in the same generation was just incredible!

it was also a welcome throwback to the early 90s at a time when 80s nostalgia was very much in vogue. Pretty much no game that I can think of even tried the vibe they pulled off in this game.

good pull! so, he used it once ("rarely") in a dire situation against absolute evil, not exactly running around, slicing up mall security. ๐Ÿ˜‚

PS - i just watched level 1 on genesis as it had been a long time. yes, it looks weird as hell to see Aladdin brandishing a deadly weapon, weaving a trail of carnage as he makes his way across town ๐Ÿ˜‚ what were they thinking?!

I second this request!

PS - have you listened to the podcast Legacy Music Hour? They used to do some interview episodes, and they did David Wise, Tim Ferriss, Oka, Tanaka, and I want to say Alberto Jose Gonzales(?!) but I might be getting a little mixed up over time.

suffice to say its a great podcast and those episodes are really special โค๏ธ๐Ÿ‘โœŒ๏ธ

Re: Nintendo Is Now Going After YouTube Accounts Which Show Its Games Being Emulated

The_Nintend_Pedant

@Beauville

"So what this article completely and totally fails to mention is that his first strike was from a video just before this covering the MiG Switch cartridge copier - a device that lets you dump your switch games and play back up roms on real switch hardware.

Of course Nintendo isn't going to look kindly on someone telling 300k subscribers how to pirate games for their current console."

I believe what you are saying, and nintendo goes after people for much less, but to be fair, making a copy of a game you own and playing that copy on your switch is in no way piracy.

If they showed how to upload the files and make them available for download publicly, or how to sell them for profit, sure, but I doubt that was in the video.

its like saying showing someone how to make deposits and withdrawals is the same as showing them how to launder money, or how to shoot a gun is the same as murder. โœŒ๏ธ

PS-

https://www.riaa.com/resources-learning/about-piracy/

even the RIAA website seems confused about what piracy actually is:

"Common examples of online copyright infringement:

You download an app on your smartphone that allows you to โ€˜stripโ€™ the audio from any YouTube music video and permanently keep that audio in your music collection."

downloading an app ITSELF is copyright infringement? and, there is NO audio on youtube that I could use this app to obtain, that isn't copyrighted?! ๐Ÿ™„๐Ÿ™„๐Ÿ™„๐Ÿ™„๐Ÿ™„ plz

Re: Nintendo Is Now Going After YouTube Accounts Which Show Its Games Being Emulated

The_Nintend_Pedant

1) is the strike against the "emulation of the game" as the headline and body of the article suggest, or is it against the content itself being shown? I dont really see what copyright has to do with the very act of emulation, nor do I see so far where they are "going after" emulation of their games as opposed to the footage of the gameplay.

2) its a minor thing, but you don't emulate games, per se. you emulate the systems that play them. โœŒ๏ธ more to my first point, you cant see "emulation happening" in a video, you can only see the end result which is just footage of the game.

Re: Don't Hold Your Breath For A Tekken Collection

i couldn't care less about a single new 3d fighting game but id care a whole lot for a Tekken trilogy collection โค๏ธ ditto virtua fighter and soul edge/blade/Calibur.

@845H one person's "simplistic" is another's "fun/accessible/action-oriented/direct/etc." โœŒ๏ธ for me the series peaked with two and three.

The_Nintend_Pedant

@AJB83

a thoughtful person gave me MGS collection (physically) on switch but I cant even play it because it wont even fit on my (admittedly aging and tiny) sd card ๐Ÿ˜† and, because the port got such mixed reviews im not in a huge hurry to upgrade.

๐Ÿ˜• i mean, how depressing is all of that?

(EDIT - can anyone tell me: if i go through the trouble of downloading these giant remasters to a new SD card, will I STILL have to put in the meaningless, token, insulting Cart every time I want to play those games? ๐Ÿ˜ฎโ€๐Ÿ’จ)

Re: New Storefront Law Tells Us What We All Should Know: We Don't Own Digital Games

The_Nintend_Pedant

@slider1983

he is talking about ownership vs licensing, on a technical level. when you buy a copy of mario, you arent buying the software you are buying the right to play a copy of that software. you are right, and like i said for most people, it is a distinction without a difference. โœŒ๏ธ IMO it's unhelpful in the context as theres a clear difference between a physical copy that can't be taken away and a digital pseudo purchase that possibly can which happens to be the conversation we are having. ๐Ÿ‘
