Re: Nintendo Is Now Going After YouTube Accounts Which Show Its Games Being Emulated

The_Nintend_Pedant

@Beauville

"So what this article completely and totally fails to mention is that his first strike was from a video just before this covering the MiG Switch cartridge copier - a device that lets you dump your switch games and play back up roms on real switch hardware.

Of course Nintendo isn't going to look kindly on someone telling 300k subscribers how to pirate games for their current console."

I believe what you are saying, and nintendo goes after people for much less, but to be fair, making a copy of a game you own and playing that copy on your switch is in no way piracy.

If they showed how to upload the files and make them available for download publicly, or how to sell them for profit, sure, but I doubt that was in the video.

its like saying showing someone how to make deposits and withdrawals is the same as showing them how to launder money, or how to shoot a gun is the same as murder. ✌️

PS-

https://www.riaa.com/resources-learning/about-piracy/

even the RIAA website seems confused about what piracy actually is:

"Common examples of online copyright infringement:

You download an app on your smartphone that allows you to ‘strip’ the audio from any YouTube music video and permanently keep that audio in your music collection."

downloading an app ITSELF is copyright infringement? and, there is NO audio on youtube that I could use this app to obtain, that isn't copyrighted?! 🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄 plz

Re: Nintendo Is Now Going After YouTube Accounts Which Show Its Games Being Emulated

The_Nintend_Pedant

1) is the strike against the "emulation of the game" as the headline and body of the article suggest, or is it against the content itself being shown? I dont really see what copyright has to do with the very act of emulation, nor do I see so far where they are "going after" emulation of their games as opposed to the footage of the gameplay.

2) its a minor thing, but you don't emulate games, per se. you emulate the systems that play them. ✌️ more to my first point, you cant see "emulation happening" in a video, you can only see the end result which is just footage of the game.

Re: Don't Hold Your Breath For A Tekken Collection

The_Nintend_Pedant

i couldn't care less about a single new 3d fighting game but id care a whole lot for a Tekken trilogy collection ❤️ ditto virtua fighter and soul edge/blade/Calibur.

@845H one person's "simplistic" is another's "fun/accessible/action-oriented/direct/etc." ✌️ for me the series peaked with two and three.

The_Nintend_Pedant

@AJB83

a thoughtful person gave me MGS collection (physically) on switch but I cant even play it because it wont even fit on my (admittedly aging and tiny) sd card 😆 and, because the port got such mixed reviews im not in a huge hurry to upgrade.

😕 i mean, how depressing is all of that?

(EDIT - can anyone tell me: if i go through the trouble of downloading these giant remasters to a new SD card, will I STILL have to put in the meaningless, token, insulting Cart every time I want to play those games? 😮‍💨)

Re: New Storefront Law Tells Us What We All Should Know: We Don't Own Digital Games

The_Nintend_Pedant

@slider1983

he is talking about ownership vs licensing, on a technical level. when you buy a copy of mario, you arent buying the software you are buying the right to play a copy of that software. you are right, and like i said for most people, it is a distinction without a difference. ✌️ IMO it's unhelpful in the context as theres a clear difference between a physical copy that can't be taken away and a digital pseudo purchase that possibly can which happens to be the conversation we are having. 👍

"The original Area 88/UN Squadron is my all time favourite SNES shmup and I still play it regularly to this day."

me too! and one of the few games I've been playing since childhood and STILL havent beaten (and I generally beat shmups!) though i dont at all consider it unfair!

also, GREAT example of an arcade port that just dusts the original in terms of content 👍 this is one of my favorite phenomena of the golden era, the self conscious over-selling of expanded arcade ports on "inferior" home hardware. ✌️

Re: Super Game Boy Just Got The Ultimate Upgrade

@KingMike

very interesting! definitely hadnt ever considered the gameboy printer in the mix, but the thought of a SNES with a sticker printer makes me very happy haha.

side note, I did not realize that Sega/Atlus' relationship went back that far! 🤔

thanks 👍✌️

"The gameplay felt like the mature take on Zelda that so many of us were craving at the time."

You are SO right! 😊☝️

Btw do you have an opinion of the original LoK game? I've suddenly become curious about it lately and I might have to check it out while I'm revisiting Reaver. ✌️ cheers

OMG - I just realized this collection has Blood Omen where I thought it was Reaver 2. 😱

I must get an evercade.

Re: Super Game Boy Just Got The Ultimate Upgrade

The_Nintend_Pedant

it just occurred to me that the point of the link cable on the sgb2 is for linking a gameboy to it, not necessarily 2 sgb2s together 😂 like for trading Pokemon, most likely. pretty rad ✌️

id always been a bit curious as to the need, since they added 2p and even 4p multitap same-screen to some games exclusively for super game boy (and how cool is that?! I like this approach to "hybrid" gaming loads more than Switch personally, to the degree that I wish the new console were a console with Switch backwards compatibility, and continue switch support as the "handheld" part of the equation. a boy can dream!)

Re: New Storefront Law Tells Us What We All Should Know: We Don't Own Digital Games

The_Nintend_Pedant

it's a misnomer that you dont "own" digital games, as some kind of natural order. its all about the licensing agreement: they could easily sell you drm free files that you are free to make backups of, etc.

(also, you [yes, you] can totally sell a digital game if it's on a piece of hardware you are selling.)

perhaps this kind of law will make them reconsider the shady practice of "selling" essentially rentals, leading them to a fairer agreement that grants them the use of the "selling/buying" language again.

can someone please clarify for me if/whether Nintendo or anyone else can actually make my eshop purchased/downloaded switch games stop working without my consent?

because otherwise the only distinction for "ownership" is the idea that:
a)I can make backups of "my" games, and barring that,
b) I'm entitled to a lifetime of free "redownloads," which just doesnt seem realistic.

PS - @Poodlestargenerica
"You don't own physical games either, just the cartridge."

I think what we have here is a distinction without a difference ✌️

Re: Super Game Boy Just Got The Ultimate Upgrade

@NinChocolate

indeed! the sgb was always an excellent experience, and one of my favorite toys as a kid (i wonder what ever happened to that thing?!)

personally I never had a clue of any problems until nerds yelling about it on the internet years later. and im a nerd so. 🤓

"I'd personally rather people just made actual new games for these systems, especially the SNES, rather than all this random extremely niche stuff,"

i get what you are saying and of course I like new games too, but I just dont think thats what this modder would be doing if not for this 👍

Re: PowKiddy Is Actually Doing Something Slightly Different With Its RGB20 Pro

The_Nintend_Pedant

@sdelfin

whoops! i meant ill finally be trying dead cells, but crazy taxi, sotn and huntdown are all favorites that i havent played much on android yet, that I do own. 👍 CT and SOTN in particular have been elusive for me since I had them in their own day, way back.

I doubled down on Huntdown because I enjoyed it so much on switch! isn't it great?! seriously one of my favorite games, ever.

haha playing cuphead while ill sounds like a real PITA, but I have a hard time playing anything at all if im genuinely very sick tbh. ✌️

@Blast16

"Did yours come with the SD cards or did you make your own image?"

It came with cards but my friend got one for himself too, and he put ArkOS on there and a chise games he thought we'd like. Here's the thing, though: he just got into emulation, and he's practically computer illiterate and he acted like it was super easy to do 👍

"Something like this is very tempting, but… we all have so many options for retro games I don’t really need this 😜🤔"

You know, I felt the same way, but if you dont have a pocket device to knockaround with, I think It's worth it. Mine fits in my tiny sling bag i carry around, and I intend to build a kit for it containing charger, mini hdmi cord, and 2-4 compact bluetooth controllers, for the tiniest retro multiplayer setup ever. 😎

Dont forget, the "V" model (not "VS") like I have runs android, too. so theres some opportunity to play modern mobile games, too (I will be finally trying Dead Cells on there soon, and SOTN, Huntdown, crazy taxi, and a number of other mobile games I own but never found a great way to play before.)

(btw ive done very little tweaking so far and it plays ps1 beautifully, and lots of the dreamcast and psp games I tried ran well also. 👍 so between those and the android stuff, the "modern" control set is justified in my opinion.)

anyway, thats my 2 cents! ✌️

Re: Two More PS1 Classics Join Antstream Arcade Ahead Of PS4, PS5 Launch

The_Nintend_Pedant

it's weird to me to call Worms Armageddon a "PS1 Classic" when it was originally a Windows exclusive and also that wasnt the best or only console port eventually released.

I'm still curious what the draw of Worms Armageddon on switch is when i already have a similar looking Worms game on there (though I'm a fan since the first game and I'm open to the idea.)

Re: This Is Why You Should Never Store Your Retro Game Collection In A Shed

The_Nintend_Pedant

"We were told that, if properly cared for, these shiny pieces of plastic would last forever,

However, in more recent times, it has become apparent that this isn't the case and that CDs have a finite lifespan, and it's perhaps shorter than we imagined – although the actual time is massively dependent on how a CD is stored,"

It appears then that appropriate storage is part of proper care, who knew? 😂

seriously though i feel for this person. That's a tough hit even if they kind of set themselves up for it. ✌️
