I miss arcade games being good. Arcade games now, they are made simple for the type of kid who is entertained by robots singing the same songs on a loop, the type of kid who finds it entertaining when two numbers that normally follow each other, follow each other. Seriously, I tried playing a newer Top Gun game and you couldn't lose, it just cost money to make the lights and sounds activate. Arcade games have definitely regressed, it's like all you can literally do is play reskinned games of pong, and these are supposed to be premier arcade machines... Sure, now you move a character instead of a line, and you avoid balls instead of returning them... but it's mostly the same rules of logic, just inversed. Luckily home gaming has flourished and evolved to enable some incredibly entertaining experiences that put you through the whole spectrum of emotions.
This guy is an artist who's work will become the stuff of what museums dream of. As a society, most people would just look at this and just think it some antiquated tech being upcycled and loved, and yes that is part of it, but it's so very much personalized like the embellishments of ancient kings sword. It is an artifact of our society, it symbolizes what was important to us as people, and I pray archeologists thousands of years from now find many more buried in our rubbled ruins and rubbish pits, maybe we can be known as the video game dynasty.
I'm curious as to how premium those keyboards are? I've only recently dived into the deep end of keyboard enthusiasm... But I've learned there's a lot that goes into separating the ewaste from the luxurious.
@Sketcz I think of escort missions like quick time events, they can be incredibly useful narrative tools when implemented properly, but so few game designers even understand the purpose of said tools that they are often poorly implemented. QTEs are meant to convey a sense of surprise and urgency, but doesn't offer that when it's overly used. And a good escort mission, or any other disliked game mechanic, is one that the protagonist doesn't want to participate in. This allows for better immersion as the scene can be anchored around the shared reluctance to participate in what's being tasked. If it's a hero character, have them escort an despicable ally. And if it's an anti-hero, it's even easier to do. Heck, maybe make an option to instead fight the escort and offer a faster story branch. There's nothing worse than reading through the plot and then being forced to jump through the hoops, feeling like the developers are insulting our intelligence.
I'm a huge advocate for not hating the poorly implemented game mechanic, blame the game devs who poorly implemented it.
I dunno, it's a cool design? But we are talking about such a niche community with little reach.
Like, the cat could sue? But it's obviously not even worth the legal fees. I feel too many people throw around copy protections on work that's barely marketable.
@RupeeClock most of these budget devices are thick. I got a rg35x sp, and it's too thick to be carried in my pocket, it fits but it sticks out and is a little uncomfortable. ive been playing a lot of Pokemon black on it, and it's really got me interested in one of these dual screen devices... But I already have enough toys.
I can't speak for profitable trends in the arcade market, but as a gamer interested in discovering what constitutes as a modern arcade game, retro arcades are a dime a dozen. You buy a bunch of old arcade machines on discount, get a booze license, and viola!
Trying to find an arcade that houses the latest arcade machines... Near impossible.
@Slackshoe IDGAF! South Parks use of AI was brilliant. Y'all just mediocre workers who get paid for doing the tedious work that creative designers don't have time for.
I mean, if each nation didn't hold its own sovereignty, it wouldn't be a nation? Oops, I didn't mean it to insult all those European vassal states, but I kinda did... Sorry.
@Exerion76 yup, his ship sailed long ago. Yes got to play into the younger crowds. Heck, I'm sure some smaller modern arcade cab makers would love for some free promo. A rotating guest cab space of rotating demo units would be sick.
The problem with the tech industry, is that no one is willing to take pay cuts and live off of rice and beans after living the fat life. I was listening to an interview of an old babushka in rural Russia talking about how she would eat only potatoes if Putin asked her to. How many of us have such passion?
I've got no gripes with the hardware, the only thing stopping me from purchasing one, is that it's just Doom? Sure, the frame rate is improved... But the game has been around for how long? This project should have reclaimed Doom from the corporate boops and returned it to its community. It should have included all the best of what can only be described as fan made DLC.
Sadly, I can't support anything Japanese after hearing about their ruling elites cracking down on fun. There are plenty of efforts being made world wide to produce unique and novel gaming experiences.
We are better off without these corporate entities hoarding talent. May this be a warning to any would be future game developers, don't sell your soul.
@slider1983 bruh, mismanagement? Thats an understatement. It was a con job through and through, and the bag holders are praying to get something out of the dumpster fire filled and fueld by their cash. But seriously, the Chinese make better retro consoles than our supposed "OG" industry heavy weights. It's mind boggling how so many sycophants create the environment that allows these inept CEOs to thrive.
Eh? I'm no collector. As soon as I got an ereader, I stopped buying physical books. Well, not completely, as we are tactile creatures, and sometimes I need to smell and feel the paper; to feel the weight shift from one hand to the other as I near its end...
But my point being that I'm all for putting our old games in the landfill for archeologist to discover thousands of years from now. I like those unofficial live service hacks that fans make for legacy hardware as a way of preservation.
"They are doing a new game in the series though, so it does make sense to build brand awareness and make people think about the original game."
This. Modern media campaigns are they long and slow build up as they hope to plant seeds into the minds of prospective customers. Marketing companies will even pay internet media companies like Google, to push brand related media into people's feeds. From their news aggregate to YouTube, someone is paying for you to see it, and now they have something to put in front of us.
Still, I might check it out? The event, not the new game. Inline skates are lame.
@beltmenot I was gonna say the same thing. I don't know the guy and never knew he existed... But knowing that another wizard behind the curtain is gone, saddens me.
My hats off to these cats! In the arts, there's a common theme of limiting one's ability to express themselves, and finding new forms of expression within those limits. Poetry is one such art, and so is retro programming.
I don't know... It's a little click baity? Fully functional but unusable claw controllers ruined it. If anyone thinks that's going the extra mile... Just quit.
I still think a hacked Wii reigns supreme. It's just the right kind of gaming setup to leave at mom's for when her grand kids visit, or when i need a little nostalgia.

All one has to do is order direct from China, and tariffs don't apply. As long as the item is less than 800$.
