It feels like they only just started allowing PS2 and Gamecube, it's hard to believe it's already been 6 years!
I'm in favor of watching Arino play games from those consoles because I think it would be enjoyable, just as I enjoyed watching him play that PS2 bus game at the show in Saitama there are some Wii games I would love to see him tackle, but I don't think that makes them retro. PS3 and Wii have more in common with today's consoles than they do with the Famicom or other retro consoles. They are definitely the beginning of the modern era of gaming.
I do agree with Arino's reasoning about younger viewers. It's a variety show, and he even tackled a Dreamcast game during the first season (which was in 2003). I don't think the show needs to worry too much about whether something is retro or not, but rather how old it is. Part of my concern is that a lot of games from that generation are still available on modern platforms, so depending on what games they pick it might not feel like GCCX anymore.
Then again, just because it's available to pick from doesn't mean it will get played often. They barely play PS2/GC games, and those have been on the table for over half a decade now.
This game is awesome. And Jack, mad props to you for getting it right that the game has ADV style dialogue. THANK YOU for not making that oh-so-common mistake of claiming it's styled after a genre that didn't exist until nearly a decade later.
@Shiryu you're going to dislike hearing this but the definitive edition of any Japanese game is always going to be the original Japanese version. Languages aren't 1:1 (especially not English and Japanese which are two of the most distant languages in the world) and changes will always have to be made in order to make the game playable in English. Especially with a game on a console like the Mega Drive where text elements are graphical tiles, meaning that any English translation would have to make heavy sacrifices in order to make the text fit into the alloted space. If you want the definitive experience then you should study Japanese.
When I saw the article thumbnail, I thought this was news about Lodoss War until I read the headline. Now I'm a little disappointed that it's not Lodoss War lol.
@Thad being inspired by another game is fine. Being so devoid of originality that the only thing worth saying about your game is "it's like if Sonic and Crash had a baby" is not.
Something like Hollow Knight is notable because of what it brings to the table in terms of originality. If the only thing it brought to the table was "it's kind of like Metroid" then it wouldn't be a very popular game. As a developer you have to expand upon these concepts and introduce new ideas to make it your own, not make an inferior clone.
It feels like most of the news on this site anymore is about AI recompilations of old games or cheap Chinese junk handhelds. I wish we could get some kind of shakeup in the retro scene because this is really stale.
@allahver_fist I heard that you're a big deal within the gay rights movement and I respect the massive impact you have made through your presence within the LGBTQIA++ community
@AeonicB a product that hasn't been in production for nearly 30 years which has become expensive due to consumer demand has a level of rarity to it, and that level of rarity increases as time passes and more and more units stop working.
One of the staff involved said on his personal Twitter that everyone on the team is working through the Obon holiday to ensure it gets to customers as soon as possible.
I'm always happy to get more add-ons for the Egret. I pre-ordered it back before it released and I can't believe it's still getting support all these years later. This has been my favorite mini "console" by far!
This is one of those games that's not going to make much sense once translated. Even the title of the game itself can't really be translated because it's a pun.
@mjparker77 that was all during pre-production, so it shouldn't affect anything. It just means the first production batch will be larger than they initially anticipated.
Didn't he say he was using AI for the coding? Removing AI generated art assets isn't enough, he's going to have to restart the entire project from scratch if he actually wants to ditch AI.
@tektite_captain you're aware that companies can get into serious trouble if they lie about their sales data, right? Commodore has investors, so falsely reporting on their sales data can result in large fines, lawsuits, and criminal charges for execs (Peri). It doesn't matter if they're not publicly traded, they have angel investors so falsifying this data would be a breach of fiduciary duties.
You're accusing them of a very serious crime because you refuse to accept that anyone in 2026 actually wanted to buy a flip phone or a C64.
@tektite_captain Sure, everything is exactly as you say. All of these sales are imaginary and the company isn't making any money at all. They will have to shut down next month. They also didn't make any money on their last product, it's a wonder they're still in business or had any money to fund R&D of their new product.
@tektite_captain they didn't say anything about sales figures, it's public info on their site (displays which batch you will be part of when ordering, and batch size).
7000 units is really good for a startup that has literally never shipped a phone before, and at this rate the phone will surpass the sales of the Commodore 64 Ultimate which was also a successful product. A few million dollars in revenue is nothing to sneeze at, and if you're going to pretend that's somehow a failure than that would make you the grifter.
@SecretSeashell most people didn't spend a whole lot of time on the internet before it was in their pocket. You seem to be operating on the assumption that time not spent on a smartphone will instead be spent on another internet connected device, which seems to be the opposite of the point (and likely a sign of addiction).

Re: The RetroTINK-6X CE Is A Powerful 1440p Scaler That Costs Just $230
@GravyThief the 5X has some niche features that this doesn't, which is very notable if you want to play PS2 games and especially.
What do you not like about it? I bought the 5X pretty soon after it released and I love it.
