Spyro the Dragon

27 years after its original release, the classic PlayStation platformer Spyro the Dragon has just received an unofficial PC port.

The port, which was developed by Amec and tyscorp, is called "OpenPete" (a reference to Spyro's original name during development), and is now available in v0.1.3 for Windows, with Linux and MacOS versions coming at a later date.

As stated on the website, it lets players experience the original PlayStation game on PC with additional options, including higher frame rates, widescreen, and extended draw distances, and also lists the ability for players to replace the music and textures by swapping the necessary WAV files and PNGs in the game's files.

There's even talk of more extensive modding support on the horizon, alongside possible support for Spyro 2 & 3 (as "no Spyro-specific addresses live in the runtime"), giving people hope it could one day grow to include the original trilogy.

The project, according to its creators, was built using a combination of "decompilation and recompilation", being based on altro50's as-yet-unfinished decompilation project, Matthew Stanley's AI-assisted PSXRecomp tool, and SoapyMan's Psycross.

We first heard about it in June, thanks to a post from the Spyro speedrunner lumilaura, who published a video of the port on Twitter/X, stating, "You're not dreaming, this is Spyro 1 running natively on Windows 11."

At the time, she tweeted out that the project was being made with "no AI", but later clarified that was her saying she was "pretty confident tyscorp isn't vibecoding the thing," and said that "If he's using Claude (which he hasn't disclosed), I genuinely don't think it's that big of a deal."

Right now, no repository is available to check how extensively AI was used, but given the Claude-coded PSXRecomp is involved, it's safe to say AI was involved in at least one aspect of its creation.

As for why the repo is not live yet, the website explains that "the source tree carries copyrighted game data used for validation: memory dumps, reference screenshots, and hardware traces" and "it can’t be published until it's separated out."
