Krikzz's range of EverDrive flash carts has paved the way for retro gamers to have their entire collections at their fingertips, and now the engineer is looking to expand the range with an Optical Drive Emulator, or ODE for short.

ODEs let you load ISOs on consoles that rely on optical media rather than cartridges, and we've already seen several examples, such as the MODE for Saturn/Dreamcast and, more recently, ArcStation for the PS1.

Once upon a time, ODEs required quite a bit of setup to install, but modern examples have become impressively streamlined, to the point that many are simply plug-and-play devices.

Krikzz's offering, still in active development, will be the same. It will connect where the CD drive normally goes (so some minor installation work is needed), but it won't require soldering and is therefore fully reversible.

Krikzz has shown off a prototype of his device plugged into a PSOne console; the USB-C cable at the top end of the board is for development purposes only, in case you were wondering.

ArcStation is shipping to customers now, so it will be interesting to see how Krikzz's alternative shapes up.
