Deciding what actually constitutes "retro" in the world of gaming is a tricky topic — one that inevitably ends up provoking a lot of debate among people online.
For some people, the concept of retro gaming will always be fixed, referring to a very specific period in gaming. Meanwhile, others have created their own rules for what they classify as retro, believing the label can be earned, usually after enough years or technical innovations have passed to separate it from the modern generation of consoles.
For the Japanese retro gaming variety show, GameCenter CX, hosted by "Chief" Shinya Arino, it typically defines retro games as "software for hardware released more than 20 years ago." However, with the PS3 and Nintendo Wii turning 20, this has inevitably sparked debate among staff about whether those games should be featured in the future.
As a result, the show held a livestream on YouTube over the weekend to discuss the issue, featuring viewer polls and staff opinions, before ultimately deciding to lift the ban on PS3 and Nintendo Wii games, thereby officially classifying those consoles as "retro" (h/t: denfaminicogamer).
At the beginning of the broadcast, a survey was conducted with approximately 14,000 people voting on the issue. At this point, 71% wanted them unlocked, while 13% wanted them to remain sealed, and 16% were indifferent.
Arino then test-played the Wii games Wii Fit and New Super Mario Bros. Wii, and the PS3 game Dark Souls, before conducting another survey of 17,000 people.
In this final survey, 80% favoured lifting the ban, 9% preferred keeping the games banned, and the remaining 11% were indifferent, indicating most people were in favour of seeing the games featured on the program.
Following this, Chief Arino then decided in favour of lifting the ban. Explaining his reasons for this, he said he wanted to attract "new fans", including younger gamers in their 20s.
This isn't the first time we've seen a group making a ruling on whether the PS3 is retro, with GameStop issuing a joke statement in March of this year, stating: "the Sony PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Nintendo Wii U are, for all practical purposes, now officially retro consoles."
The reasons GameStop gave for this at the time weren't exactly serious, with the retailer citing "the presence of component cables, the lack of Fortnite, and the realisation that they launched when George W. Bush was still president."
