It's been over two years now since we last gave an update on Mega Splatterhouse, the fanmade Mega Drive / Genesis port of Namco's horror-themed arcade beat 'em up Splatterhouse, but it appears its developer, Monster Bath Games, has just issued an exciting update on the eagerly awaited project.

Writing on social media, the developer of the unofficial project has issued a statement saying that as of this week, the fan game will officially be "feature complete," with the developer having just two remaining levels to finish off.

As they state, the "next round" of tasks after that will be "clean up and tweaking," which essentially means changing some of the palettes and making sure the music and SFX are implemented and everything is as "close to perfect" as possible. Then, they say, they need to figure out how to release it.

This is where things get slightly interesting. In the past, Monster Bath Games previously released a Halloween demo of Mega Splatterhouse as a free fan project, but it seems they have slightly higher hopes for the finished version, wanting to reach out to the respective rights holders (in this case, Namco) or their partners to enable them to do "a legal release of the game with the little extras."

"I’ll contact a few people," they wrote on Twitter/X. "I’m very serious about doing this the legal way. I don’t care about the money, I care about it being handled properly."

One motivation they gave for wanting to turn the project into an official project is to avoid a scenario where they release the game for free, only to see people inevitably steal their work and try to profit off it on AliExpress.

As they put it, "Ending up on AliExpress after all the work I've put into this port would fucking suck."

Honestly, we'd love to see this happen, but we're unsure of the likelihood of Namco agreeing to something like this, given the lack of precedent.

Hopefully, as was apparently the case for h0ffman's Zero Wing Neo Geo port, there will be someone reading this, though, who will be able to potentially point Monster Bath Games in the right direction and help them realise their dream.
