Comparing games to Dark Souls is like catnip for journalists; we can't get enough of it. But in this case, I feel it's more than a little warranted.
Yesterday, as I was browsing social media, trying to stave off boredom, I happened to come across something both ridiculous and genius in equal measure: a new upcoming game that appears to mix the physics-based gameplay of Sega's Super Monkey Ball with the levelling, interconnected world design, and ambience of FromSoftware's Dark Souls.
Marble Souls is a new "genre-defying" title from Fynn Levy, Rollin' Barrel, and Stuffed Wombat, the creators of the positively reviewed experimental indie games Mosa Lina & FALLSTRUKTUR, along with ThorHighHeels and girls@computers, and is due to arrive on Steam sometime later this year.
As the title suggests, it has players encased in a giant marble, with the goal of exploring the vast world and collecting lost souls to "level up a wide range of stats." These include your standard health, stamina, speed, defence, and poise attributes, as well as an additional set of skills that "change how your character sprints, jumps and rolls."
The developers are teasing the ability to create "ridiculous builds" depending on how you choose to spend your points, letting you "break out" to unlock new paths. There are also items and equipment to collect as you go, which give your marble prison new capabilities to experiment and explore.
If this sounds like something up your street, you can wishlist the game here.
