The team behind the GF1 Neptune, an unofficial recreation of Sega's unreleased Neptune console, has issued a statement which discusses the current state of the project.
The statement – posted on the GamesCare Twitter account – says the company has been getting "many emails" asking when the console will eventually become available.
"To ensure everyone understands the real scenario, this project took shape amid the pandemic, and the first version of our board was completed in 2024—that is, at a time when the market and development weren't being aided by Artificial Intelligence like we see today," adds GamesCare. "It was a complex engineering effort driven by pure persistence."
The account then goes on to detail the issues which have blighted the venture since it was first revealed:
"Over these years, unfortunately, we've faced some issues related to people who were part of the project ecosystem. To sum up long stories, these complications ended up draining our financial resources and our ability to manufacture the console on our own, even in small quantities.
In light of that, we changed our strategy and began actively seeking partner companies willing to manufacture the hardware. One of our top priorities from the start was to bring a console fully ready to market, where you watch a review and decide whether to buy it or not, and if you decide to buy, you receive it quickly—without the need to spend months or years waiting for a crowdfunding or pre-order (pre-sale) delivery (no criticism of anyone here, it's just our preference).
Finding these business partners has been a difficult task."
Despite the roadblocks to market, the GamesCare team says that what it has achieved is "incredible" and that many people have already registered their interest in the console on the project's official site.
"Reaching this number of interested folks entirely organically is simply fantastic for us," adds GamesCare. "It only gives us more strength to keep going. We hope to secure the right partners soon to bring this console to you in the way we've always believed was right: with transparency, respect, and a ready-to-go product in hand."
