Eidos Montreal, in collaboration with Atari and developer Nightdive Studios, has announced a release date for the upcoming remaster of Thief: The Dark Project. The shadowy rob-'em-up will come creeping onto PC and console platforms on December 3.
Originally released back in 1998 and developed by Looking Glass Studios, Thief: The Dark Project was among the first in a wave of stealth-related franchises that launched in the wake of Konami's Metal Gear Solid, replacing the ballistic action of the mid-'90s FPS boom with cooler, quieter, and more trepidatious adventuring. Titles such as Thief, Hitman, Syphon Filter, and Tenchu were among the debutantes that (somewhat) attempted to replace shooting with sneaking.
Set within its own fictional take on the Victorian age, players guide trained-from-birth master thief Garrett as he stalks the shadows of the night, looting monarchs and governors and ultimately stumbling upon a clandestine conspiracy, one that will shake the very foundations of the era itself and usher in a whole new age of treachery and metallurgy.
Nightdive's remaster looks to capture the precision and quiet efficiency of the original PC adventure, while offering a 4K, 60 FPS upgrade for its visual elements, an overhauled control scheme, and more modern UI elements, including a new weapon wheel, a level selector, a behind-the-scenes vault, and a custom campaign designer.

A physical edition of Thief: The Dark Project Remastered is also en route from publisher Clear River Games. The "Trapezoid Edition" contains a physical copy of the game on PS5 disc or Nintendo Switch Game Card, Steelbook casing, a remaster diary, and a unique, trapezoid-shaped box. A Steelbook-only edition is also available. Pre-orders are open now from Clear River Games and selected online retailers.
Thief: The Dark Project Remastered launches December 3 on PlayStation, PC, Xbox Series and Nintendo Switch platforms.
