If you fancied spending the weekend picking your way through a terrifying mansion of your own repressed trauma and lost memories (basically what I do every Saturday), then you're in luck, as publisher KOMODO has just released PC horror RPG Pocket Mirror: GoldenerTraum on PlayStation and Nintendo Switch platforms.
First released on Steam way back in 2016, Pocket Mirror: GoldenerTraum is a 16-bit-inspired RPG built within the RPGMaker programme. Adopting the classic, top-down visual style of many SNES classics, GoldenTraum tells the creepy tale of a young girl who awakens in a strange mansion with nothing but a small pocket mirror and a mind of broken memories.
Cautiously treading the long, lonely hallways and dank, abandoned rooms, our protagonist must solve discover clues as to their identity, past, and the strange scenarios that lead them to this grim location. On her journey, she will meet a cast of characters - some friendly, some not so friendly - and will make choices that will ultimately define her fate. Will she return to whatever life she led before? Or is she doomed to wander the apparition-filled halls forever?
Pocket Mirror: GoldenTraum offers a trip through a surreal, metaphysical world, populated by spooky creatures and filled with puzzles to solve and obstacles to overcome in order to bring the protagonist to one of several endings. A suitably Gothic score and nostalgic 16-bit visuals enhance the "Ghost Story" atmosphere, while its characters and animated cutscenes provide depth to its tale of horror and woe.
Already a darling of the PC's RPGMaker scene, fans have been waiting for developers VisuStella and AstralShift (of Little Goody Two Shoes fame) to bring Pocket Mirror: GoldenerTraum to consoles. And while it may have taken a whole decade, the vintage aesthetic and classic RPG gameplay fortunately make the experience timeless.
Pocket Mirror: GoldenTraum is available now on PlayStation and Nintendo Switch platforms.
