As the evenings draw closer and the skies get darker, Indie publisher New Blood Interactive has drawn back the curtain on Tenebris Somnia, a grim and gothic horror that comes crawling onto PC and console platforms today.

Developed by Andrés Borghi and Tobías Rusjan, in conjunction with Argentinian outfit Saibot Studios, Tenebris Somnia is a 2D adventure title with an aesthetic that sits somewhere between the 8-and-16-bit generations - perhaps reminiscent of the DOS horror wave of the late '80s and early '90s. The creepy but nostalgic audio/visual forms Satanic synergy with a cryptful of FMV cutscenes, all of which feature live-action, non-AI performers and practical special effects.

The story follows a young woman, Julia, whose visit to a former boyfriend sees her swept into a grim parallel universe, populated by bizarre and terrifying creatures. In the spirit of survival horror, Julia must use her wits and adaptive skills to solve puzzles, battle beasties, and stay more than one step ahead of the grave. Only then will she uncover the realm's secrets and find a path back to reality.

It looks suitably spooky, with "fun" creature design, classic adventure game sensibilities, and a more than welcome dose of FMV horror, which I admit I'm an absolute mark for. Some early reviews have been fairly positive, so I'll be adding this to my list of dark delights for this Halloween season.

Tenebris Somnia launches digitally today on PC, PS5, Xbox Series, and Nintendo Switch platforms. A physical release is expected at a later date. A demo is also available on select platforms.
