Update []:
Homebrew developer Kaffeeware has released a playable demo of their SNES port of Konami's legendary Castlevania: Symphony of the Night.
The developer has stated that no AI was used in this project, and that it's currently being done "by eye" – although Kaffeeware says they are looking into decompilation sources to make things feel a little more accurate.
The dev adds that they intend to "keep native SNES specs" but "will need to move to a bigger ROM" to fit everything in.
We perhaps shouldn't expect a 1:1 reproduction of the game on Nintendo's 16-bit system, however. When asked if they intend to port the entire game, Kaffeeware says, "NO. Definitely not the reverse castle."
As one of the most beloved Castlevania entries, SotN has been the subject of many fan-made updates and ports. A version is currently in development for the Genesis, the SNES' big rival back in the '90s.
Original Story []: Castlevania: Symphony of the Night is widely regarded as the crowning glory of Konami's 40-year-old vampire-hunting series, and one of the best games of all time – so, when we heard news that it was being unofficially ported to the Sega Genesis / Mega Drive back in 2024, it didn't come as a massive shock. People cannot get enough of Alucard, clearly!
It would seem that another modder thinks that you can never have enough SotN love, as a separate porting project is in the works – this time for the Genesis' 16-bit rival, the Super Nintendo.
As spotted by Jeff Hahn, Kaffeeware is at a very early stage in the development of an SNES port of the game, but it's already looking pretty impressive, as you can see from the footage below.
