Update []:

The first trailer for the Golden Axe animated series from the Star Trek: Lower Decks creator Mike McMahan and American Dad's Joe Chandler has officially dropped, giving us our first real look at the fantasy-themed action comedy adventure series based on the classic Sega brawler (h/t: Push Square)

Honestly, when I first heard the announcement of a Golden Axe series back in 2024, I just put it in the same camp as other Sega adaptations like PictureStart's Comix Zone and Space Channel 5 movies, doubting it would ever be released. Credit where credit's due, though, it seems the creative team behind the project has proven me wrong — however, there have seemingly been some changes behind the scenes, with Paramount taking over distribution from Comedy Central.

The show, according to the trailer, will premiere September 16th, 2026 on Paramount +. An updated blurb has also been released, giving us a fresh update insight into the story:

“In an homage to SEGA's iconic 1989 video game, Golden Axe follows legendary warriors Ax Battler, Tyris Flare, and Gilius Thunderhead as they reunite to save Yuria from the evil giant Death Adder, who just won't seem to stay dead. Their quest is complicated by Hampton Squib, an inexperienced and wildly underprepared adventurer whose dream of heroism far exceeds his abilities. Forced to work together despite their flaws, they must find a way to stop Death Adder once and for all.”

Original Story []: Comedy Central has announced that it has greenlit a 10-episode animated series based on Sega's beloved sidescrolling hack 'n slash series Golden Axe (as reported by Variety).

According to the announcement, the show will be animated by Titmouse, with CBS Eye Animation producing along with Sony Pictures Television and Original Film.

Mike McMahan (Star Trek: The Lower Decks; Solar Opposites) and Joe Chandler (American Dad!) will write the first episode and will also serve as executive producers on the project. Chandler, meanwhile, will also be credited as the showrunner.

The show is set to feature the voice talents of Matthew Rhys as Gilius Thunderhead, Lisa Gilroy as Tyris Flare, Liam McIntyre as Ax Battler, Danny Pudi as Hampton Squib, and Carl Tart as Chronos “Evil” Lait.

The Sega Sammy Holdings Inc. president and CEO Haruki Satomi has also been confirmed to be an executive producer on the series, along with Sega Corporation president and COO Shuji Utsumi, and Sega’s Toru Nakahara.

Here's a synopsis for the show:

"[Golden Axe] follows veteran warriors Ax Battler (McIntyre), Tyris Flare (Gilroy), and Gilius Thunderhead (Rhys) as they once again battle to save Yuria from the evil giant Death Adder who just won’t seem to stay dead. Fortunately, this time they have the inexperienced and underprepared Hampton Squib (Pudi) on their side."
