Something Pretty Historic In Amiga History Just Took Place At Gamescom

New Commodore owns nothing Amiga related either. It's all own by Cloanto/Amiga Corp

The first rumours that RGL.had the brand name was four months ago and RGL even posted images of the box art with the Amiga logo on X over a month ago

So does this mean we’ll likely see “AMIGA” instead of “A1200” on the computer itself. Plus some other packaging bits and pieces?

I’m guessing if this has been in the works for a while it may account for the delay to December that we had earlier this year.

@FPGAguru Commodore don’t own any of the copyright / trademarks, but now the legal gubbins has been sorted out, they are able to licence the Amiga name easily. So releasing a “Commodore Amiga” will actually be possible, and indeed I would think quite likely.

Then what, if all you can is re-live old game, waste of money. Is this device going to useful also, which it wont be. I owned an amiga before, if was what it was a great computer for the time. Now that time has passed.

I worked at shop repairing and upgrading those systems. If it could run new and current software, that would be great. Now, without that what are you gonna be able to do with it. No major the software development house is going to support it. So it will die again even the c64, which I owned a c128, same thing. It's going to die. It's gonna go away like before.

Now my real wish list is to have amiga OS release to current computers that will be great, not a revival of an old computer that you cannot do nothing with. And yes, I know amiga os does exist now, but i'm talking about an x 86 platform. Or even on arm as a true o s not under android. I'm just talking about real work. That can compete with mac o s x, windows or linux. That's the business there.

So the difference is just what it says on the box and that is seen as important ? Makes no difference whatsoever to me. (Could say Freega for all I care). Having the actual roms is important but the A500 already had that.

I am more interested in stuff like those Powee PC Accelerators that were used by people who were really into their stuff afterwards or at least the most powerful model (A4000 ?).

I'd be interested if this wasn't a one trick pony. An FPGA that could support many cores to open this up would be my ideal. The MiSTer started out with Amiga and ST in mind but these days can include any of the computers we remember and while we've got consolised versions of this hardware, we also need someone to build it into a wedge computer for us to properly enjoy the Amstrad, Spectrum, Acorn, computers we all played and coded on. The logo on the front isn't so important, just make it a good keyboard that can cope with a hammering from Speccy Daley Thompson Decathlon and other keyboard games I remember from childhood at home and at friend's houses.

@adamh31 It would be very expensive to get an fpga that can beat something like a pistorm. (On a real Amiga). It is pretty good for interfacing. Palm was doing 68k to arm decades ago. It’s good that most of the hardware can be used. That sort of emulation is very different.

@Ruka Yeah, I'm waiting for the FPGA version Commodore are going to do. If it turns out like the C63 Ultimate it could be very exciting.

I preordered this machine as soon as I saw the news of it's release and I could order one in Canada via Amazon. I own several A500s and have a couple of CD32s and A1000s, but this machine will be more convenient to use on newer displays. The price with a keyboard is simply ridiculous when comparing to current offerings.

It should be realistic for Commodore to produce new hardware branded Amiga. Most of the parts are already available through A1200.net who makes cases, keyboards and keycaps for both Amiga 500 and 1200. Good FPGA versions based on 68K versions is also out there. So most of the parts etc, should be possible for Commodore to license, in order to get new versions of the Amiga 1200 in production. Amiga provides the roms and OS, to make it work like the classic system. Commodore also have some of the old engineers like Dave Haynie, which will most likely work on the Amiga line. Amiga needs Commodore and Commodore needs Amiga. Commodore had a strong name behind it, which is needed for brand recognition like back in the day. It will be interesting to see what extra Commodore can provide to a potential Amiga 1200 Ultimate. In order to make it special it needs to both support the original clockspeed, but be able to go beyond a Motorola 060 with RTG support. Things like both RGB and HDMI support with filters like scanlines is a must. Improved audio and 8 channels of Stereo would be nice. Not sure about the disc drive on the side, but if they exclude it they should at least change it with something swappable like SD cards. Commodore did good with the C64U, i hope they can repeat the success with the Amiga!

@antonvaltaz For most people back in the day, they associated Amiga as Commodore Amiga. Only hardcore enthusiasts knows that Amiga was bought by Commodore, but it’s irrelevant for the general consumer. Afterall, Amiga was a Commodore product for 10 years before the company went south! So in order for the Amiga name to become some kind of relevant again, they need Commodore behind it for a full revival! This Hyperion and Cloanto clownery, plus the general Amiga mess for 3 decades needs to return to it’s roots with Commodore!

I have their C64 Maxi and Spectrum, and even without the original branding on those they still feel incredibly authentic. So it wasn’t something I was fussed about with the A1200, but if it can now have the original branding then all the better.

I just hope all the rubbish I’ve seen lately from the new Commodore company doesn’t somehow infiltrate into Retro Games Ltd because of this! 🤣

This one is going to run Workbench, I believe. Would love to use Deluxe Paint again on an Amiga.

I cancelled my preorder when they announced the delay, considering getting from Amazon now as if it's not as good as hoped they do have a decent returns policy.

Interestingly the box on Amazon has the Amiga logo showing now which is nice but doesn't really make a difference, at least for me.
