Re: Prolific Saturn Modder Creates A Successor To One Of Sega's Rarest Consoles

He’s basically created something Hitachi already made in the Navi Saturn, a portable system which could run off a 12v cigarette lighter socket which included an optional screen and Sat Nav GPS antennae.

I’ve owned two of these over the years and they are beautifully made, slim and more robust versions of the regular Saturn. They also have Karaoke functionality built in.

SEGA wouldn't have entered our radar if David Rosen never changed their business focus.

I was in his company albeit briefly at the Olympia Amusement Trades Exhibition around 35 years ago and he spoke passionately regarding SEGA's future direction, discussing synergy between the arcade and home divisions. He was a gent who spoke to small exhibitors such as myself with real enthusiasm for the industry.

He will remain the pioneer of the modern amusement forever.

I never understood what the Game Gear offered in the handheld marketplace.

If you wanted a budget system with good battery life and a great library of games it had to be the Game Boy.

The Atari lynx was your the best option for a modern handheld built from the ground up with arcade like sprite scaling.

The Pc Engine GT/Turbo Grafx was the full fat home console experience in the palm of your hand. It even had an amazing Street Fighter II port which looked fantastic on the small screen.

That leaves the Game Gear with it's old previous gen console tech, awful sound, rubbish battery life and limited game library.

Re: Review: The Games Of A Lifetime - Jaz Rignall Charts The Evolution Of An Industry

@Damo I originally imported games and systems in 1987 from Japan as a distributor before opening an office in Kowloon HK called West Lake. I then opened a store and mail order business called Akihabara Games Central. I used to supply games to EMAP and Future Publishing in exchange for cheaper advertising slots. Something I stopped supplying when they were returned without their box or a very scratched CD!

I remember PC Engine supplies. They used to buy directly from Japan and later became Console Concepts. The guy was called Colin Dimond. I think he hailed from stoke.

@Damo I’ve just preordered a copy, thanks for the review.

I met Jaz and Eugene Lacey a couple of times whilst dropping off and collecting games I supplied EMAP for review for the PC Engine and the MD.

As an import games retailer and a fan of their publications, It was a real treat to see them in their work environment. It was just as I expected it to be. Chaotic, messy, empty pizza boxes strewn around the office but above all else a great atmosphere with many like minded individuals who obviously worked well together.

Pleased I didn’t have to sell my gran in order to get a copy of the book.
