A fan-made fighting game featuring characters from various Sega and Capcom games has reportedly been shut down after Capcom reportedly took issue with the use of its copyrighted characters.

4CYDE Studios' PC fighter Sega Vs Capcom has been online for a number of years and has even been covered on Time Extension a few times in the past, but it now seems that the developer has had to discontinue the project, releasing a public statement to try to downplay any speculation about what happened.

"SVC is shut down because of using Capcom's characters and likeness, nothing else," wrote 4CYDE Studios on Twitter/X. "With any fan game, that's the risk and we have no regrets making the game happen. Thanks to everyone involved in the project. Glad we reached a season 1 release."

In response to this, the reaction online has pretty much been what you'd expect, with most people online sending their condolences to the developer and expressing their disappointment and anger at Capcom for shutting the project down.

But there are also some who have been a bit more empathetic to Capcom's position, including the game developer Hidetoshi Ishizawa (otherwise known as Neo_G), who was the director on games like Street Fighter III 3rd STRIKE and the main planner on Capcom Vs SNK 2.

In a statement, he said this use of Capcom's copyrighted material was obviously not okay, and also mistakenly accused the team of ripping out character models directly from Tatsunoko vs Capcom, something he later walked back after being corrected. However, after being told his perspective was likely rooted in Japanese attitudes toward copyright, he maintained this wasn't an East vs West situation, stating that the law was undoubtedly on Capcom's side, regardless of location and whether the project was being offered for free or not.

While downloads have inevitably been pulled, videos of the project are fortunately still available to show off the work that had been done in the past, with 4CYDE Studios stating, "I hope people understand this was all a learning experience to make future original titles (which is what I was trying to do even before SVC). I will never feel like this game was a waste of my time."
