Re: New Atari Trademark Application Hints At Hardware Refresh For Mr T's Favourite Home Computer

Kenoddis

They should focus on the Atari ST instead. This was a highly sought after computer in the 80s that competed with the Commodore Amiga. Since the new Commodore will probably get som licensing deal to produce the Amiga again, it would be cool to see a reissue of the old 520ST from Atari! They should release the slim OG version without the internal disc drive, but include all ports for old accessories like external drives etc. Hopefully we will see this computer based around FPGA, combined with HDMI and USB. Commodore did wonders with the Commodore 64 Ultimate, now it’s Atari’s turn to release something that is not software emulated!

Re: The Neo Geo+ Will Be "Better Than Emulation" Says Modding Legend Furrtek

Kenoddis

@AphexAcid Well it’s a joined project, which is promising. It sounds like they are using the existing MISTer FPGA Core for the Neo Geo, extracted and implemented into separate ASIC chips. The MISTer Core is very good, certainly extremely close to a 1:1 implementation of the original system. Since it’s a plus system, it probably comes with a few improvements as well compared to the original. I’m certainly excited, i’d never thought i would see the AES back in production again!

Re: "No Emulation, No Compromise, No Comparison" - The $250 Neo Geo+ AES Aims To Be A 1:1 Replica Of SNK's Classic Console

Kenoddis

@zenarcher The situation is very different now than in the past, SNK is owned by another company these days and is focused on quality rather than quantity. Back then SNK had licensing deal with Tommo about making the Neo Geo X, which was based on emulation. From what i recall reading, was that there was a contract breach since the product was poorly made. Both the components and software used was poorly executed, leading to a product that was really badly designed. SNK didn’t want the Neo Geo X to be released, but due to a contract breach Tommo kept producing and selling them, without SNK’s approval. The new Neo Geo AES is made by Plaion in conjunction with SNK, to assure quality control since it’s a licensed product. So the products can’t be compared in any way! Your last argument about EEPROMS, there is no need to use those old chips in 2026, NAND is much cheaper to make and is way faster. Every new modern Neo Geo cart being made these days including Flashcarts use NAND flash!

Re: "No Emulation, No Compromise, No Comparison" - The $250 Neo Geo+ AES Aims To Be A 1:1 Replica Of SNK's Classic Console

Kenoddis

@Serpenterror I don’t know if you read the article, but it does not seem like it. First of all this is a joint venture between SNK and Plaion. The console use real components like ASIC chips. The Zilog (Z08) are still in production, and the Yamaha YM2610 can be obtained new in buckets for peanuts. The Motorola 68000 is a CPU from 1979, it’s not hard to reproduce due to it’s simplicity. It’s not 1991 anymore and something that was premium 35 years ago, is cheap to make today. So this is no clone, it’s as real as those made back in the day, but for the fraction of the price!

Re: Commodore's Official Remake Of Taito's The NewZealand Story Launches Next Month

Kenoddis

This is one of many games that doesn’t need a soulless upgrade. The original was made with pixels, and should be kept that way! I also hope Per Fractic and the rest of the crew wins the battle over the Commodore name. They paid millions to be the rightful owner, with the original engineers to back them. Unlike the italian Commodore who just slaps the logo on cheap laptops, Peri’s Commodore brings back the past and put resources into developing new hardware for future!

Re: "People Talk About Physical Being Dead... But We Have A Loyal Community" - Broken Sword Boss On "Defining Your Tribe"

Kenoddis

@gojiguy You are totally right about that. It's still a billion dollar industry, but the big publishers tries to push the digital narrative, despite the fact that many still buys physical games. Take Japan, they still buy more physical games than digital, that is certainly not a market that can be ignored. Nintendo sells far more physical games globally for the Switch than digital, that is why the consumers now are upset about their betrayal when it comes to keycards!

Re: "Amiga Lives!" - Apollo A6000 Promises To Pick Up Where Commodore Left Off

Kenoddis

This is just expensive and it brings nothing new to the table. At that price it would be expected to contain something new, not specs like an overclocked A1200/A4000. Even the case is 3D printed, at $1000 it should at least have a case that is injection molded. Hopefully Commodore will bring something new to table next year with the Amiga, it will be interesting to see if they can either license or simply buy the rights from the current owners. I would rather see what old engineers like Dave Haynie can cook up, than buying any of those clone systems.

Re: "We're Building The Future Together" - Commodore Has Sold Over 10,000 C64 Ultimate Systems

Kenoddis

@boatie Mini and Maxi was never made to be a real Commodore 64, it's cheap emulation with everything that includes made purely for games. Besides both were sold for around $80-130 range. It can't be compared to the Commodore 64 Ultimate, by using FPGA replication as the logic, and all the original ports and connections it becomes much more expensive starting at $299! Just like the Spectrum Next, sales numbers is not comparable since it caters to two different markets!
