Re: Atari Is Officially Pulling Support for the Atari VCS

You can run Linux on a Nintendo 3DS too (https://www.gamebrew.org/wiki/Linux_for_3DS) but good luck redownloading your eShop purchases that you never really "owned" anyway. If Atari means what it sounds like they said about letting owners easily use their own PCs to stand in for Atari infrastructure (including backup and restore, browsing alternate storefronts for homebrew, etc.), that's promising. You're right that it's a lot less essential when the system isn't a walled garden to begin with, but it's still nice that users don't have to abandon or recreate the original Atari launcher or their purchased games.

Sure, the console never offered anything nearly justifying its price, but they've been honest throughout the process, and if we want to have an Atari around we can't expect them to keep shoveling more money into a pit forever.

Honestly, they should be celebrated for returning control to the owners with this offline update. Imagine if the larger game companies did the same.

One of the biggest benefits is native conversion from the internal framebuffer to digital (HDMI) output. That's inevitably going to be crisper and lower latency than an external analogue to digital converter, even the high-end ones. It's possible to hard-mod an original N64 to achieve true digital output, but this product is a much easier and more flexible route for most users.

Of course, "crisper" isn't necessarily always better on games originally designed for a CRT, but I'm pretty confident that playing on a modern HD display is going to look a lot better with the Analogue3D than a vanilla N64.
