Update []:

ToastedGreedo has released a demo for their fan port of Star Wars Trilogy Arcade for the Sega Dreamcast. The demo includes playable versions of the originally revealed Boba Fett showdown, along with the Yavin battle featured in the climax of the original Star Wars: A New Hope.

ToastedGreedo also revealed that Claude AI tools were used in the creation of the port.

"This project was developed with the assistance of Claude Code.

Sonnet 5 and Opus 5 were used as a programming aid throughout development, but the project itself was directed, tested, debugged, and iterated by me.

No art assets were created using generative AI. I am responsible for the implementation and final code included in this release."

There are myriad funny Star Wars quotes I could put here. But I ain't feeling too funny.

Original Story []: One of the white whales of the emulation world has been Sega's Star Wars Trilogy Arcade, which debuted in 1998 and maintained a presence on the global market for many years, despite an enormous downturn in arcade profitability.

Built on Sega's powerful Model 3 hardware, Star Wars Trilogy Arcade featured scenes pulled directly from the phenomenal sci-fi film series. The game allows players to take control of Star Wars' Yavin battle, complete with its climactic Death Star trench run. The Empire Strikes Back was represented by the sub-zero war on the frosted plains of Hoth, while Return of the Jedi contributed Endor's Speeder Bike chase and base capture.

Two additional rounds, situated as set-pieces between stages, featured a lightsaber duel with bounty hunter Boba Fett on Tatooine and the climactic showdown with Darth Vader. This latter sequence is perhaps Star Wars Trilogy Arcade's best-remembered moment, despite its clunky, QTE nature.

With the launch of Sega's Dreamcast hardware just a year later, fans expected a port of the arcade game to be an inevitability. It was not to be, however, and there was a great disturbance in the Force, as if 10.6 million voices suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced. Since a port of Star Wars Trilogy Arcade never actually emerged, the emulation community has strived to bring Sega's coin-guzzler home.

The latest attempt comes from homebrewer ToastedGreedo, who is attempting not to emulate the arcade game in its original form, but to create a new Dreamcast port based on its coin-operated counterpart. So far, ToastedGreedo has coded the original attract sequence, the stage select screen and the aforementioned Boba Fett battle, all of which are comparable to the original Model 3 game.

ToastedGreedo suggests they will release a demo disc in the near future, playable on actual Dreamcast hardware and containing both the Boba Fett sequence and the Yavin battle. This will be a true litmus test, as Star Wars Trilogy Arcade's vehicular sections are incredibly fast-paced - and will likely be the toughest stages to convert to Sega’s sixth-gen platform.

I don't want anyone to find my lack of faith disturbing, but ToastedGreedo has set themselves an enormous challenge. If they succeed, it will certainly be a watershed moment in Dreamcast's homebrew scene, realising one of the platform's most notable missed opportunities almost three decades after the fact.

You're all clear, kid. Now let's blow this thing and go home.
