Nintendo didn't have a big presence in most of the world, in the places where they did have some presence it was through famiclones. Also there's the feeling that Nintendo invented everything. You can do a 5s research and find out the truth. I ensure you it won't hurt (maybe your feelings).
One thing to add is that the SNES have color maths that you can do with 2 layers. So it is not really a transparency effect, more a color effect with several limitations. Also you could only rotate ONE background layer. So yeah, it is good but it also come with limitations. The Mega Drive was just a straightforward hardware, better to develop for and it was indeed fast.
