Downloaded the app on my iPad today. When I booted up a game, a very obtrusive ad popped up, one of those really garbage ones that try to trick you into interacting with it, and taking a long time to show the x to close it.
When I finally got to the game, it displayed in the wrong aspect ratio. I tried to fix it in the settings, but there were no options for that. Went back to the game, and another ad popped up.
I went back to the App Store to check if I got the right app, and noticed that the developer’s other app is a 99 cent ad blocker. That seemed pretty shady to me, so I deleted the app immediately.
Another way to phrase their statement: “We took the game offline, and not enough people complained, so we’re gonna leave it that way, to save the money it costs to keep the servers running” 😄
This looks like everything I’d want in a Batman game. I don’t know how it would have turned out in the end (especially if they were going to rush it, trying to release it as a movie tie-in), but it might have been great.
Imagine if Rocksteady had been working on this game for the past ten years instead of Suicide Squad 😢
@JeongersGaming I don’t think they were ludicrous in this case (he admitted that it sounded like that afterwards), but yes, I was dumb, and I apologize.
@Sketcz I have to apologize. I follow American politics more than I should — especially since I’m Canadian — and reading the rest of your comments in this thread, we seem to be mostly on the same side when it comes to most of our views on censorship. But reading your initial comment, you sounded very much like a far-right conspiracy theorist, and complaining that the “woke mob” is infiltrating our favourite game companies. The phrasing near the end of the comment “triggered” me — as they like to say — and made me think you were sending out some Gamergate dog-whistle or something.
Since I don’t know you personally, and it doesn’t matter in the long run, I’ll accept you at your word that you didn’t know the origins of the phrases that you used, and I’m sorry if it seemed that I was calling you — or other commenters — Nazis, or anything similar.
I want to continue the discussion of what constitutes censorship or not, but I have too many thoughts with not a lot of space to do it, so I’ll leave it at that. I’ll try to go back to my new policy of not commenting on controversial topics in the comments section of a video game website.
Not the best looking action figure, but still better than the in-game character sprite, which is the worst-looking werewolf in video game history. (And yes, I’m being hyperbolic, there is probably one werewolf model worse than Altered Beast’s 🤣)
And — forgive the tangent — but has anyone else ever been annoyed by the fact that the power-up in the game turns you into a werewolf, but just has you shoot fireballs instead of clawing and biting? Like, why even make the power-up be a werewolf if you’re not going to have it act like a werewolf? 🤪
Looks promising! I’ll definitely keep my eye on this one.
My favourite rally game from the PS1 era was V-Rally 2. Don’t know how it holds up, but I remember playing it a lot. I tried the Colin MaRae games but never really got into them.
If anyone’s looking for an old-school rally game that’s already out, you should check out Rush Rally 3. Haven’t played a lot of it yet — so I can’t give it a full recommendation — but what I did play felt solid.
@LordOfTurnips Yeah, it’s bad that I can’t give a rating to GT6, because it was released so close to the PS4 launch I never even bought it (and thus never played it), because I wanted to wait for a next-generation GT. It didn’t help that GT5 and PSP were both disappointing.
I never played much of Sport either, because of the lack of single-player content (some of which got patched in, but wasn’t up to the standards of previous campaigns). I haven’t bought 7 yet, because I’m waiting for a better price while I play the millions of games in my backlog.
I rated 2 the highest, because I loved the campaign mode of that one; none of the subsequent ones felt the same. But I’m sure that’s a lot of nostalgia talking.
@HoyeBoye Yeah, the one I have is entirely bright orange. No mistaking that for a real gun. (Although, with the way gun culture in the US has gone, there might be AR-15s that are painted in bright colours designed for little kids, creating the exact opposite problem.😳)
@Westernwolf4 It reminds me of my Skyrim situation. I had pre-ordered the Collector’s Edition for PS3, so I had it day one. But after reading reviews, and reading a news story about the game gradually degrading in performance the larger your save file got (I think Fallout 3 had the same type of issue), I decided to hold off playing it for awhile. Ended up not touching it for a year, and I still blame that for why I never ended up finishing the game (well, that, and getting so stuck in sidequests that I neglected the main story), and I still haven’t gone back to it, despite owning it on 3 generations of consoles.
I never played New Vegas till long after release either. Fool me once, and all that. It was still a buggy mess, but nothing game-breaking, and it remains one of my most fondly remembered RPGs that I ever played. Still thinking about going back to it someday, but I’m worried that it hasn’t aged well.
I loved Death Rally back in the day. Played the hell outta the demo that was on a disc that came with a PC Gamer magazine. I believe I eventually played the full game, and it was pretty great. I remember taking turns with a cousin, trying to save up enough in-game money to afford the upgrades we would need to win later races.
I should boot it up again sometime, to see if it holds up. The original game is free on Steam, alongside a remake.
I loved this game when I rented it for the SNES back in the day. Haven’t tried it recently, but I think it might still hold up. I’m surprised it isn’t more of a cult classic.
I have to learn how to sort out my priorities in life. Out everything on this list, I’ve only fully played one or two of ‘em. I’ve got an insurmountable backlog of games, that I’ve only recently been putting a concentrated effort into rectifying. Having not played Chrono Trigger or Final Fantasy VI, I feel exceptionally ashamed.
@Scooby-Doo I would not advise you to play the PlayStation version of Chrono Trigger (or Final Fantasy IV, V, and VI). Unless you enjoy waiting 10 seconds to load into every new screen, or - even worse - waiting for 2 seconds every time you open or close the menu screen.
Those loads are baked into the game’s code, so even unofficial emulation and the version on PSN Classics have these constant loads. I’ve tried both. It makes the games nearly unplayable, given that half your playtime will be spent looking at a black screen.
It’s one of the excuses I give to myself for not having played those games. A very bad excuse, because I’ve had access to many different ways to play them for many years now. 😊
@KayFiOS I know some people like the offset sticks, it does make sense for certain games - ones that have 3D movement, but don’t require much camera movement, and rely on the face buttons to perform actions.
I find that nowadays, most games require you to have both thumbs on the sticks, for simultaneous movement and camera control. The face buttons are only used for quick, infrequent actions - like jumping and reloading - but you have your thumbs on the sticks constantly. All FPS games do this now, and some other games - like Soulsbornes and God of War - are starting to popularize using the triggers for hacking and slashing, by default. And when playing 2D games, I like using the D-pad for moving and face buttons for actions.
In each of those cases, I find it better to have both thumbs in the same alignment. And that seems to be the majority of games these days.
Either that, or maybe I’m just a sucker for symmetry 🤷♂️. To each their own.
I almost picked the SNES controller, for nostalgia reasons. But I had to be honest with myself and pick the DualSense, because it’s the culmination of everything that came before it, and learned what worked and what didn’t over the years. There may still be some room for improvement - back paddles should be standard, and the sticks should have a deeper indentation - but it’s the best controller I’ve ever held in my hands.
I have never heard about this project before, or if I had I’ve forgotten that I did.
Being a huge Legacy of Kain/Soul Reaver fan, I definitely would have been disappointed hearing about this. I was already a bit miffed about Nosgoth, having the first time acknowledging the existence of the franchise in years be a crappy multiplayer game.
It’s interesting to hear Barlow talk about not being able to do a direct sequel to Defiance. I don’t remember it very well - I haven’t played Defiance since playing it after it released (I have considered doing a playthrough of the complete series recently) - but I thought the ending of that game did set up a sequel, although with a severe paradigm shift in the story.
I do agree with him that the story had become incredibly convoluted. I usually don’t like time travel stuff in properties that aren’t specifically about time travel (i.e. I hate when Star Trek does it, but I like Doctor Who). I loved the games in spite of it.
I’m not sure if I would’ve liked Dead Sun if it had been finished and released, with regards to the narrative. But it does sound like the people making it had some original ideas when it came to game mechanics. I’m sure I would’ve be happy that the franchise had some chance of being revived.
Hopefully Embracer does something with the license now. I mean, as long as its good. Even remakes or remasters would be fine at this point.
