As part of its "Meta Connect" event, Meta revealed its new Meta VR Glasses: a lightweight take on virtual reality that seems frankly magical compared to the classic Virtuality units of yore, or even PlayStation VR2. The new hardware features micro OLED screens, motion capture support, and a battery and processor unit that clips onto the wearer's belt.
In line with the new tech's announcement, several games have been revealed to kick off the sales drive. We've already covered Capcom's Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies VR, but publisher Enhance Games also revealed a new Tetris title, which will utilise the width and breadth of Meta VR technology.
Tetris Effect: Mixed Realities promises to be a "mind-blowing" reinvention of the previous VR title Tetris Effect (2018), combining the classic Tetromino puzzle gameplay with an ethereal, realm-hopping experience that will "blur the line between the real and the virtual". Tetris is gonna get MORE virtual!
Jesting aside, Tetris Effect was an excellent VR experience. And given the advances in VR technology in the past decade, along with the addition of motion-sensing controls, Enhance could produce an immersive Tetris experience like none other. Just don't make its audio/visual pull too magnetic - some of us may get so deep in the groove that we don't want to return.
Of course, I'd have to own Meta hardware first, so that ain't happening in this homestead.
Tetris Effect: Mixed Realities is currently in development for Meta VR and Quest 3. It will launch in 2027.
