There's been big news in the PS2 emulation community this week with the release of Ver 2.02 of the Claude-coded PC5SX2 emulator. Once active on a modded PS5 console, the new update lets users play their PS2 games directly from disc, via the PS5's native optical drive.
According to community sources, including original developer "Swordpdf", once PC5SX2 2.02 is installed on a PS5, inserting a PS2 disc causes the emulator to directly stream (or live dump if the user prefers) the disc's contents, prompting almost immediate playback through the emulator's software.
Several videos uploaded to social media seem to corroborate these facts, showing titles such as World Rally Championship, Castlevania: Curse of Darkness, and Jak & Daxter: The Lost Frontier running on PS5 directly from disc. Due to the native infrastructure of the PS5's optical drive, only PS2 games pressed on DVD are compatible, as the PS5 cannot read games printed on CD-ROM.
The legalities surrounding both emulation software and "jailbroken" consoles remain a tentative tightrope walk directly over the heads of Sony's legal team, given that the company still sells its back catalogue digitally via the PS5's PlayStation Store.
Many commenters on social media, however, see the increased focus on modded PS5s and their legally grey abilities as a direct act of rebellion against the publisher - a "Just Desserts" scenario, if you will - in response to PlayStation's recent commitment to an all-digital, all-licence future.
Since the launch of Version 2.02, Swordpdf notes they have been using the A.I. tool Grok to adapt PC5SX for physical PS3 discs. This will no doubt further an increasingly troublesome scenario for PlayStation - already mired in controversy over its decision to remove ownership from future products.
