A trailer has just dropped for a new, non-"AI slop" static recompilation/PC port of the N64 title Super Smash Bros., which will feature high-frame support, low-input lag, "properly scaled UI for ultrawide displays", and "day-one mod and texture support through N64Recomp".

Back in May of this year, as you may recall, a developer named JRickey released an AI-assisted PC port of Smash Bros. called Battleship, which immediately drew criticism on social media for its poor accuracy, bugs, and lack of features.

Viewed as a pointless exercise by some, this project inevitably raised the question of whether we'd ever see someone take a more hands-on, human-led approach in the future; something we're now glad to report finally seems to be happening — this time from a new development team consisting of SrBananaMan64 and Boopie.

"This port is not AI slop!" wrote SrBananaMan64 in a comment beneath the port's trailer, immediately addressing the proverbial elephant in the room. "It was made to set a better example of what a recomp is like. This started development back in October of 2024 by ZestyDev, where he got the game running with no enhancements. I noticed development had stalled for that port, so I decided to try it for myself on a fresh repository. Development recently picked up in mid-September, with the help of a new dev named Boopie."

According to SrBananaMan64's comment, since then, they have been busy writing a ton of patches for the game and refactoring everything with Boopie, but claim they still have some work to do before the project is considered done. This includes testing it across different platforms and finishing some additional QoL features/mods. As a result, there's no precise release date yet, other than that it is simply "coming soon."

Besides widescreen support and bespoke mods, one of the coolest announcements featured in the trailer is compatibility with the mod Smash Remix. This is a popular mod for Smash Bros., which introduces new characters, courses, items, music, and much, much more, to greatly expand the original experience. As with other recomps of this nature, when the project is released, no Nintendo-owned game assets will be included in the release, with players having to provide their own legal copies.

Will you be playing it? Let us know in the comments!
