Not 24 hours on from our report on Super Mario 64 for the Atari Jaguar, another homebrew project surfaces, with Nintendo's groundbreaking N64 platformer "running on", of all platforms, Milton Bradley's humble and hefty Vectrex.
A video uploaded by "ArcadeJason" shows the 1996 release stripped of its vivid colour and mammoth polygons and stripped down to the vector-based wireforms that are the platform's trademark. The plucky plumber leaps from a warp pipe and into the hub world of Princess Peach's Castle - instantly recognisable even without its rainbow-coloured textures and gallery of portraits.
Perhaps the coolest element of the video is the vector replications of in-game characters, with Mario, Toad, and pro-fisher Lakitu decompiled into their most basic 3D frames. We even get to see the iconic intro sequence, with a boxy Princess Peach model inviting Mario to a party at the palace.
Obviously, this build is not running natively on Vectrex hardware (can you imagine?), but is made possible via ArcadeJason's (real name Jason Kopp) UVMC2 (Ultimate Vectrex MultiCart 2). This device, which plugs directly into the Vectrex cartridge slot, essentially operates as a miniature PC, taking care of the rendering and other computations while outputting the result to the console's built-in monitor, with audio outsourced via a 3.5mm jack. The build itself was coded on the SDK of modder Daniel Ferrer Guerrero.
If these names bring about a sense of deja vu, it's because the same folks were responsible for a recent Vectrex port of DOOM, which we at Time Extension reported on last week. Jason notes that, like most tinkerers, they are already moving on to new projects, and so this video may be all we see from Mario and his wireform world. Kopp does note that anyone interested in finishing the project should contact him directly.
Ok, so that's SNES, Dreamcast, PC, Jaguar, Game Boy Advance, Vectrex, and several other platforms checked off. Where does the warp pipe lead next? My money is on Barcode Battler.
