New one is cleaner composition wise. Old one wins on partly nostalgia for the style but to me mostly due to the subjects being cooler rather than just cutesy. Love their expression watching the game screen
Wow, nice work by the dev. Not likely I’ll hunt down a Japanese rom, I kinda played Gradius only on the NES. However, I have fond memories of the Up, up etc code from that time
About Goldeneye, I always enjoyed the enemy “dogfights” so to speak so much, and peeking around corners with my PP7. However, only after reading this article have I likely found out what made it so immensely satisfying compared to other FPS - the hit responses (along with the sound upon impact maybe). How come others don’t emulate this better to this day!??
I must admit I didn’t understand one bit how to execute this glitch or even what exactly it enabled from the text. Video is 1h long too… anyone got a timestamp to share? XD
@timp29 That profile pic! The Last Ninja fascinated me to no ends back when. I remember sitting in anticipation each time my friend and I waited for the game to load (took like 5-10 minutes on cassette if I’m not misremembering - so sad if the load failed and had to rewind lol)
Also kind of funny: same age, same amount of kids, same about game time. Enjoy the parenting rollercoaster of love
I can’t recall having had any issues with that stage, but… I played this with a friend at his place a lot as a kid, and as I remember it we never could pass some blinking electricity while riding small airplanes or such. Missiles fell from the sky too. I remember getting frustrated and I THINK we had to restart from the beginning when we died? Maybe because of needing many lives that you could gather earlier? My memory is so fuzzy on this haha - tons of fun though
Appreciate this. And happy anniversary! As the first console in our household, I have such fond memories of the NES (Also of Donkey Kong Game & Watch.)
Has to wonder how a world with an “Atari 3600” would have looked
That light gun 10 minutes in btw is kinda cool even if a slightly scissor-like appearance, but those wireless controllers sliding into the console…… nice! Also wouldn’t mind that “Advanced Video System” keyboard 🥰
This piece was fantastic from both sides. Thank you so much Leslie for sharing, so many golden nuggets in this piece. Many of you above express this better than I'm able to at the moment. Kudos all 😍

Fantastic piece. Loved reading everything, though disappointed but not surprised by the business practice of lock-in and under paying…
