Anyone in the mood for some volleyball? No? Well, tough luck. This week, Hamster, the creator of Arcade Archives, brings Technōs Japan's beach volleyball title, V'Ball, to modern platforms, whether you like it or not, giving players the chance to step into the role of a pair of shirtless beach bums as they battle their way through tournament match after tournament match.
Hitting the arcades back in 1988, this sports game from the creator of Double Dragon and the Kunio-Kun series was released in 2-player and 4-player configurations and distributed in the US by Taito America.
It was later ported to the Nintendo Famicom/NES and received a Japan-exclusive home version for the Sharp X6800.
The newly updated version of the arcade game releases tomorrow (Thursday, August 13th 2026) and will be available on Nintendo Switch, Switch 2, PS4, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S, with additional modes, filters, and leaderboards. As always, the Nintendo Switch and PS4 versions will cost $7.99, while the "next-gen" versions will be priced at $9.99. Something to note is that the number of players is listed as 1-2 in Japan, whereas the American version lists it as 1-4 — this is a reference to the fact that the original 4-player version seems to have been exclusive to the West.
Here's the official description of the game:
"It’s Summer! It’s the Beach! It’s Beach Volleyball!!
"V'BALL" is an action game released by Technos Japan in 1988.
Control two young men as they enter a beach volleyball tournament and aim for the championship.
Enjoy a variety of actions, such as controlling where the ball flies during serves and spikes, or delivering a more powerful spike by tapping rapidly. This is the story of their success. The rest of the story is up to you."
If V'Ball doesn't interest you, this week is another one where Hamster has revealed multiple titles, with Tehkan's (Tecmo's) Pinball Action getting an enhanced version for Switch 2, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Windows, as part of Arcade Archives 2.
This will be priced at $9.99, with a $2.99 upgrade option available to existing PS4 and Switch customers.
