Since the initial announcement of GBA-inspired KONKR Pocket Advance back in July of this year, AYANEO has taken a very deliberate approach to marketing the Android-based handheld, drip-feeding reveal after reveal to keep it in the spotlight.
For most people interested in the device, it was inevitably a bit grating, with it taking a whole week from the name reveal for us to even get a glimpse at what the device would look like, and two more weeks after that before we got the initial screen specs.
Perhaps naively, I assumed at the time that this would all stop once the device became available for pre-order late last month, but since then, the company has continued to make announcements about it. This includes, controversially, the unveiling of two new colourways for the handheld: a Peach Pink edition (announced last Friday) and a brand-new Onyx Ice version (h/t: Gamesradar).
The Onyx Ice was announced only yesterday during another "sharing session", where AYANEO's CEO Arthur Zhang revealed that the Pocket Advance had already sold 15,000 units. It is a transparent black version of the device, already available for pre-order on AYANEO's website (starting at $109 for the 3GB + 32GB version), but it has inevitably resulted in some frustration online that they were revealed after pre-orders opened, with one commenter on Twitter/X accusing AYANEO of "punishing" their customers.
This sentiment also seems to be shared by many on the SBCGaming subreddit, with one user calling the move "scummy as hell" while another said, "They should have shown us all of the colours from the beginning instead of introducing a new one every day of the week."
What makes this situation worse is that AYANEO reportedly isn't allowing players to modify their existing orders and switch colourways, due to the "excessive order volume of the Pocket Advance", with the only way to switch right now being to request a refund, wait for it to go through, and then place a separate order for your new colour of choice.
