Microsoft has released a list of 14 "classic" games that are to be removed from its paid service, Xbox Game Pass, in the coming days. Notably in the mix is the much-loved N64 classic GoldenEye 007.
GoldenEye 007 obviously needs no introduction, so here it is: Developed by Rare for the N64 back in 1997 and based on the smash hit movie of 1995, GoldenEye 007 fast became a flagship title for Nintendo's 64-bit platform, instantly hooking players with its immersive, action-packed gameplay and, more specifically, its highly compelling multiplayer mode.
Since its genre-defining debut, a lot of players (and developers) have been chasing that same itch, with Rare's classic frequent fodder for remasters, remakes, rereleases, mods, and fan projects. Its return to modern platforms, such as Xbox Game Pass and Nintendo Switch Online, was heralded with the same kind of joy reserved for dying between the thighs of Xenia Onatopp.
And there's the rub: Quite why you'd remove the Bondian adventure from a service you're attempting to sell to players is a mystery. The 007 licence is infamously mired in a litany of red tape, so perhaps this is some sort of expiration deal, or perhaps Microsoft is simply making an unwise decision. If the former, then one has to wonder whether the Nintendo Switch Online edition is also subject to similar timed removal.
Hold on to your carts; this is one repetitively sticky situation that even 007 himself doesn't seem to be able to surmount.
The following titles are being removed from Xbox Game Pass on November 15, all except for Football Manager 26, which will be removed November 10.
