A new video showcases Rare's seminal first-person shooter GoldenEye 007 in an equally rare third-person form, courtesy of a new mod from homebrewer Josh_7774.

The "GoldenEye 007 Plus" mod, seen here running on Analogue 3D software, has our boy Bond, James Bond, battling an army of Russian badniks in third-person, over-the-shoulder fashion. Three stages from the 1997 N64 classic feature in the clip, including the interiors Silo and Bunker I, as well as the frosty exteriors of Surface I.

The video was uploaded by Graslu00, who themselves have myriad 007 projects (and a GoldenEye 007 championship title) under their belt. While Graslu notes that Bond's animations are currently a work in progress (his crouch walk has him skidding about on his knees - ruining his trousers), it should be said that Josh's mod is looking solid - ironically reminiscent of other classic espionage games such as Eidetic's Syphon Filter series and the 1999 PlayStation offering Tomorrow Never Dies.

While seeing familiar locations, models, and animations from a new angle can feel uncanny, the third-person camera slides smoothly into GoldenEye 007's gameplay, with very little impact on performance. If Rare's original release had been third-person, it's easy enough to imagine it would have looked pretty close to this endeavour. Hopefully, Josh_7774 will see their project to fruition soon.

In the meantime, interested players can pick up GoldenEye 007 Plus on Josh's GitHub page.
