The ongoing RAMpocalypse has claimed another victim in the form of Polymega, the modular retro gaming system developed by Playmaji.
In a new statement, the company said prices for nearly every piece of Polymega-related hardware are going up.
From October 5th, the cost of Polymega hardware will be:
- Polymega Base Unit: $599
- Polymega Remix: $229
- Polymega Element Module Sets: $99
- Polymega RC-Series Controllers: $35
All other products in the range, including the Polymega Collection series of physical games, remain the same price.
"The cost of building physical products has been climbing for a long time, and the pressure has only intensified," says Playmaji. "Component prices for hardware have risen sharply, driven in large part by the surge in data centre investment for AI, which is competing for the same chips, memory, and other parts that go into consumer electronics. On top of that, sharp rises in fuel costs continue to push up the expense of manufacturing and shipping physical goods."
The company adds that "over the years, we've worked through plenty of challenges, and we've done everything we can to shield you from these increases. But with costs for nearly everything rising significantly every month and no end in sight, absorbing them is no longer sustainable for us."
The cost of owning a Polymega was never seen as particularly cheap, but the rise to $599 is likely to limit its ability to attract support even further.
"We don't take this decision lightly," adds Playmaji. "Thank you for supporting Polymega and for being part of this community. Your support is what allows us to keep building new products, and we'll keep working hard to deliver the best possible experience for retro game fans."
Pre-orders for "most products" have been reopened, and Playmaji says that every order placed before October 5th will be honoured at current prices. If you've been on the fence about the system thus far, now is the time to jump in.
