A short while back, Polymega maker Playmaji announced that it was refreshing the base unit of its modular retro gaming console to improve emulation performance.
The Polymega first launched in 2021, but it has struggled to reach as many people as it deserves to, thanks to manufacturing issues and stock shortages.
Playmaji has just released a second, cheaper system, the Polymega Remix, which essentially digitises your collection for use on your home computer or Steam Deck via the official Polymega App – but, as previously confirmed, the company isn't turning its back on dedicated hardware completely.
The revised Polymega base system is up for pre-order and will benefit from beefier internal hardware and – as was more recently revealed – a redesigned disc tray.
The original model has a slot for discs, like the PS5 and Xbox Series X. However, the 2026 variant has an old-school disc drive tray, like the one on the Xbox 360. I personally prefer this kind of drive, as I'm always worried about my discs getting scratched (especially when we're talking about retro games worth hundreds of dollars).
Playmaji has been releasing pre-orders in batches of 1000 units, and the first two batches are already spoken for. Around 550 units in batch three are still up for grabs. "Reserving a spot is free, with no payment and no obligation," says the company. "We’ll email you when your batch is ready to order."
