Prepare to take another Very Long Easy Right Baby, as notable modder "Shuouma" has successfully restored online connectivity to the Dreamcast muddy mudripper Sega Rally Championship 2.
Originally ported to the Dreamcast in 1999, only the Japanese edition of Sega Rally 2 took advantage of the console's rudimentary online capabilities, leaving North American and European players spinning their wheels while their Asian compatriots battled it out in the game's time trials. The newly modded edition of Sega Rally 2 finally allows Western players to experience the title's four-player online action.
Anyone looking to get down and dirty will need the 2.1 edition of DreamPi, along with a Japanese copy of Sega Rally 2 for Dreamcast. From there, users will need to create a unique User ID to access the new server tech, as the default Dreamcast ID will not allow a connection. It goes without saying that Sega Rally 2's lobby system is in Japanese, but I'm sure that with a little experience, players can muddle through to matchmaking. Hope you find some like-minded racers!
Sega Rally 2 is the latest title to have its online connectivity restored courtesy of Shuouma. Previously, the DC homebrewer has also brought online capabilities to titles including Chu Chu Rocket! Speed Devils, Power Smash, Worms World Party, and the Aero Dancing Series. Given that the Sega Dreamcast was the first mainline console to embrace online gameplay right out of the box, it is fitting that players today still have a (winding) road to enjoying its multiplayer experiences.
