It seems Neowiz's deal with Nihon Falcom to bring The Legend of Heroes III: Shiroki Majo to PC & consoles isn't the only Dragon Slayer-related news we're getting this week.
That's because Edia has also officially confirmed plans to rerelease the PC Engine CD-ROM² titles The Legend of Heroes 1 & 2 on modern consoles (PS5, PS4, Switch, & PC) worldwide next year, as reported by Gematsu.
We already knew Edia had the rights to rerelease the games, thanks to a press release last year, where it listed the two titles alongside Ys I-IV and The Legend of Xanadu 1 & 2, but since then, the company has been pretty quiet about its plans. Now, though, thanks to this fresh batch of news from Tokyo Game Show celebrations (where the games are being demoed for the first time), we know more about what form this rerelease will take and, importantly, which platforms it will target.
"The PC Engine version of Dragon Slayer: The Legend of Heroes [...] is officially making a comeback on modern platforms!" read a flyer distributed on the show floor, translated by Gematsu. "The PC Engine version added main character voice acting in select scenes, allowing players to immerse themselves even deeper into its grand story."
In case you're not up to speed on your Dragon Slayer history, Dragon Slayer: The Legend of Heroes was originally released for the NEC PC-8801 in 1989 exclusively in Japan, but was later brought to a variety of different platforms, including the PC Engine CD-ROM² in 1991 (and its North American equivalent, the TurboGrafx-CD in 1992). It tells the story of a young prince named Selios (renamed to Logan in the North American version) whose kingdom is stolen and besieged by monsters, following his journey to reclaim the throne from the conspirator who betrayed his father.
As for its sequel, Dragon Slayer: The Legend of Heroes 2, it arrived on the PC-8801 in 1992, then later that year jumped to the PC Engine CD-ROM² and the PC-9801. It takes place decades after the original and focuses on the adventures of Atlas, the son of the previous game's protagonist.
