Limited Run Games has revealed teaser images of its upcoming Collector's Edition for the Game Boy Color re-release, R-Type DX. The physical GBC title is part of a new range of R-Type DX merch available to pre-order from September 15.

Released in 1999, R-Type DX featured both the original Game Boy editions of R-Type and R-Type II, developed by Irem and released for the handheld in 1991. Outside of the enhanced colour graphics, both titles remained mostly untouched, ambitiously replicating the arcade shmup action that made the franchise such a hit in arcade centres in the late '80s and early '90s.

The new Limited Run re-release includes both titles in their original and colour-enhanced modes, along with an additional mode, the titular R-Type DX. Each individually numbered cartridge comes packaged with a full-colour instruction manual and housed in packaging sporting the lush artwork of Paul "Otaking" Johnson.

Johnson, who frequently animates epic sci-fi sequences based on popular media, crafted an R-Type short back in 2016, wowing fans with his authentic recreation of the R-9 vessel, the game's first stage, and its emblematic boss - the serpentine Dobkeratops. Seeing Johnson's nostalgic, CRT-tinged artwork on the Limited Run release only whets the appetite for further animated adventures of the battle against the evil Bydo Empire.

In addition to the Collector's Edition, Limited Run will open pre-orders for a 33-track OST, available on both CD and coloured vinyl, also emblazoned with Johnson's artwork. The CD edition will retail for €25, while the vinyl edition will retail for €36. Note that while shipping is not included, international tax and any potential customs duties are reportedly pre-paid.

The R-Type DX Collector's Edition and soundtracks will be able to pre-order directly from the Limited Run store on Tuesday, September 15, at 09:00 PT / 12:00 ET / 17:00 BST. The items are expected to ship in spring 2027.
